介紹

Quarto is Posit's open-source scientific and technical publishing system built on Pandoc. Researchers, analysts, educators and technical writers can combine prose, equations, citations, cross-references and executable code in reproducible documents. Render to HTML, PDF and office formats, or organize related documents as websites, books and presentations.

Authoring and computation

Write Markdown-based .qmd documents or use supported notebooks. Quarto integrates with Jupyter, knitr and Observable for Python, R, Julia and JavaScript workflows. Editors such as VS Code, RStudio and JupyterLab are separate tools rather than standalone applications installed by this cask. The visual Markdown editor is available through supported authoring integrations.

Mac installation and dependencies

This cask installs the Quarto command-line publishing system through the official macOS PKG. The recorded 1.10.19 installer is 247,698,243 bytes; installed storage differs. The cask supports Intel and Apple Silicon package installation and declares no explicit minimum macOS version or additional package dependencies. Follow the installer and its macOS authorization prompts, then use Quarto from a terminal or supported editor.

Document requirements extend beyond the cask dependency list. Python execution needs an appropriate Python/Jupyter environment and its packages; R execution needs R and knitr-related packages; other engines require their corresponding runtime. LaTeX PDF output requires a TeX distribution, with TinyTeX offered as an optional installation. Typst and HTML-based PDF workflows have different tool requirements. Do not assume installing Quarto installs every scientific package, language runtime or editor.

Rendering and trust

Preview output while writing, then render and inspect the final document. Rendering executable notebooks or extensions can run code with your user permissions and access local files, networks or environment credentials. Review untrusted documents and extensions before enabling execution. Reproducible source and cached results are useful, but they do not replace backups, data provenance or validation of the calculations.

Local publishing and hosted services

Local authoring and rendering do not require a Quarto account or subscription. Publishing to a hosted destination is optional and can require the destination's account, authentication and fees. A website generated locally is distinct from a hosted public website. Review output before publishing because embedded results and document metadata can expose information.

License and costs

Quarto is free, open-source software under the MIT license, maintained by Posit Software, PBC and contributors. Bundled and optional dependencies have their own licenses. Commercial hosting, enterprise platforms and third-party services remain separate from the free command-line publishing system.
