紹介

cmux is a native macOS terminal built on Ghostty, designed for developers managing multiple terminals and AI coding agents. It combines a graphical workspace interface with terminal rendering and a programmable CLI/socket API. It is not the unrelated Go connection multiplexer with the same name.

Features

  • Organize workspaces using vertical tabs, horizontal/vertical splits and terminal panes.
  • See workspace metadata such as working directories, Git branches, ports and notification text.
  • Receive notification rings and a notification panel when configured agents need attention.
  • Place an embedded browser beside terminals for local development workflows.
  • Automate workspace and notification operations using the bundled CLI and socket API.
  • Use SSH workspaces for remote machines, subject to credentials and connectivity.

Installation and requirements

Install the recorded Homebrew cask with brew install --cask cmux, or open the official DMG and drag cmux into Applications. On first launch, follow the macOS identified-developer prompt. The app checks for updates through Sparkle. The official getting-started guide also documents linking its bundled CLI into a PATH directory; administrator authorization may be needed for that location.

cmux requires macOS14 or later and supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, matching the current cask minimum. The cask declares no extra formula dependencies or cask conflicts. Ghostty rendering is embedded: a separate Ghostty application is not listed as a cask prerequisite. Shell tools, AI coding agents, remote hosts and extensions have their own installation and account requirements. A universal minimum RAM or installed-disk requirement was not established in the cited vendor guide.

The desktop application targets macOS; an official iOS companion is documented as a beta for mobile pairing and remote workflows. No official Windows, Linux or Android desktop edition is established. Remote SSH support does not make the native Mac interface a Linux/Windows app. Session restoration preserves layout and metadata; supported agent sessions can resume when hooks captured a native resume token. It does not checkpoint arbitrary live processes such as an ordinary shell, vim or tmux.

Accounts, cost and licenses

Local terminal workflows do not require purchasing an AI model subscription from cmux. The coding agents and online/remote services used inside it can require their own accounts, credentials and fees. Public Mac downloads are available; optional hosted Cloud plans have paid pricing, and their current fees and account requirements should be checked with Manaflow before use.

The current official repository identifies the desktop project as GPL3 or later, while designated server/web/relay components use Business Source License1.1 with different production/self-hosting conditions. Third-party components retain their licenses. Commercial terms may be available for rights controlled by Manaflow; they do not automatically relicense every external contribution. See the repository LICENSE for exact component scope.
