RetroArch (Metal)
Libretro · An open-source libretro frontend for emulator and game-engine cores, with unified controls, multiple menu interfaces, shaders, rewind and recording.
About
RetroArch is the reference frontend for the libretro API. It loads emulator, game-engine and other programs as dynamic libraries called libretro cores, handling their video, audio, input and application lifecycle through a shared interface.
Core-based workflow
Select a compatible core and content, then configure controls through the built-in menu or retroarch.cfg. A libretro implementation is required to run content; the frontend alone does not replace every emulator. The official project documents gamepad-centric and touchscreen interfaces and a full command-line interface. Its README illustrates XMB, RGUI, MaterialUI and Ozone menus.
Playback and presentation
The project highlights multi-pass shaders, real-time rewind, FFmpeg video recording and run-ahead input latency reduction. Availability depends on the core, build and selected driver. Driver capabilities also affect shader formats and menu visual effects, so not every feature is supported by every configuration.
This Homebrew package
This exact retroarch-metal cask is the Metal distribution, not the separate OpenGL retroarch cask. Homebrew 1.22.2 points to the official universal macOS DMG for Apple Silicon and Intel and installs RetroArch.app. The official download page recommends the universal build for macOS 10.13 and later. Homebrew declares a conflict with retroarch.
Documentation and source
The project is maintained in the libretro GitHub organization and provides a documentation center and community support channels. Use only game content you are authorized to run. Official menu illustrations are cross-platform examples, not asserted to be macOS-specific.
