About

Amazon Corretto 8 is Amazon's distribution of OpenJDK 8, providing a Java runtime and development tools such as java and javac. It suits developers and operators maintaining software that specifically requires Java 8, including command-line programs, build tools and server applications. It is a JDK, not an application store, IDE or graphical package manager.

Installation, architecture and platform evidence

Run the official Mac PKG or use brew install --cask corretto@8. This catalog artifact is the ARM64/AArch64 package for Apple Silicon, exactly 102,902,617 bytes. Intel packages are separate. The installation guide describes macOS 11 or later, while the latest three release changelog entries identify macOS 14 or later as their build target; the publisher explicitly distinguishes build targets from supported platforms. The exact minimum macOS requirement of this particular package was not independently established. Consult the current support matrix for your host rather than assuming the guide guarantees every new binary runs on macOS 11. No universal RAM minimum is stated: heap, disk and CPU needs depend on the Java application.

JDK setup and dependencies

The Mac installer needs administrator permission and installs into /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines. Use /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8 to find a Java 8 home and configure JAVA_HOME/PATH for the intended shell or build tool. Check java -version and javac -version; another installed JDK may still be selected by default. Corretto 8 does not satisfy software requiring Java 17 or 21, and it does not include your application's third-party libraries or build configuration.

Accounts, network and license

The JDK can run local Java code without an AWS account. Downloading updates needs network access; applications running on it may use their own credentials and network services. Corretto is available at no cost under GPL version 2 with the Classpath Exception, with separate notices for bundled components. Using it does not include free AWS infrastructure or commercial application licenses. Review redistribution obligations when packaging a modified runtime or bundled application.

Security and operational risks

Java programs and JAR files execute code with the user's privileges; run only trusted software and avoid using administrator accounts unnecessarily. Keep the runtime patched, test old Java 8 applications against updates and verify timezone-sensitive behavior after tzdb changes. Changing JAVA_HOME can affect builds or servers, so keep an application-specific configuration where possible. Recent release notes include timezone, OpenJDK baseline and security changes; Linux-specific desktop fixes are clearly separated from Mac behavior. The publisher’s historical 2019 workflow image shows a browser displaying Tomcat/JSP runtime properties after Corretto 8.232.09.1 installation on Linux ARM64. This is a genuine companion Java execution workflow, not a JDK GUI, current Mac installer capture or evidence of compatibility for this package. No qualified Corretto-specific product icon has been established.
