Karabiner-Elements is a free, open-source keyboard customizer for macOS, maintained by Fumihiko Takayama (tekezo/pqrs.org) and contributors. It is useful for developers, keyboard enthusiasts and people who need device-specific or application-specific input behavior.

Install and enable

Install with brew install --cask karabiner-elements, or open the official DMG and run the included PKG installer. This installs background services and a virtual keyboard/mouse driver; administrator authorization is required for the installer and privileged service approval. Open Karabiner-Elements Settings and follow its setup prompts in macOS System Settings: allow privileged/non-privileged background services, grant Accessibility/Input Monitoring permissions as required, and allow the Driver Extension. The current guide notes Accessibility approval normally also covers Input Monitoring. Choose the virtual keyboard layout matching your physical keyboard, then add a simple mapping and test it.

Requirements and platforms

The current16.3.0 release supports macOS13 Ventura through27 Golden Gate. Intel and Apple Silicon Macs are supported on macOS13–26; the repository lists macOS27 for Apple Silicon. Older systems need the vendor’s older releases, such as14.13.0 for macOS11–12; do not install the current package solely because an older version once supported your Mac. This is a macOS utility; no official Windows, Linux, iOS or Android edition is established. Minimum RAM and installed storage were not published in the cited guide. The official16.3.0 DMG is42,388,528bytes, distinct from installed footprint.

The recorded cask installs a PKG and declares no extra formula dependencies or explicit cask conflicts. Its virtual HID driver and background services are required for actual remapping. Other tools that alter keyboard input can require compatibility configuration; see the vendor’s Logitech Logi Options+ Fn-key guidance rather than assuming every input tool works together. Build-tool dependencies in the source repository are for compilation, not prerequisites for the signed downloadable package.

When upgrading from15.9.0 or earlier, automatic service startup is disabled; open Karabiner-Elements.app after upgrading to re-enable it. Use the documented uninstaller because components live outside the application bundle.

Cost, account and license

No service account or subscription is required for local keyboard remapping. The project is free and accepts optional sponsorship/donations. Its main project license is public domain/Unlicense; bundled third-party components retain their respective licenses. Imported rules can run actions, so review the rules you choose to enable.
