Jellyfin is a volunteer-developed media server that organizes your own collection and streams it to compatible web, mobile, television and desktop clients. This Mac catalog entry installs the server, rather than providing a subscription to a hosted streaming library or installing every Jellyfin client.

Your collection, your server

Create libraries for movies, television series, music, books or other supported media, then let the server scan those folders and retrieve available metadata. Connect a browser or supported Jellyfin client to browse and play your collection. Live TV and recording need a compatible source or tuner and appropriate configuration. Transcoding depends on the format, playback device and available hardware; a modest Mac may not handle several demanding streams simultaneously.

Install and configure

Choose the official Mac server build matching your processor, install the application and follow its setup wizard to create an administrator account and add media folders. The cask requires macOS 12 or later and provides architecture-specific Mac downloads. Separate server packages are available for other systems. Allow access to the folders containing your media; storage, metadata and transcoding caches need additional disk space beyond the installer. Clients must be able to reach the server over your network.

Accounts, privacy and access

Jellyfin is free software with no paid feature tier, compulsory hosted Jellyfin account or developer-run media server. User accounts belong to your own server. You supply the media and infrastructure. A local installation can serve a local network; remote access requires deliberate network configuration. Use secure authentication and protected transport when exposing it beyond your home. Metadata providers and configured integrations may contact external services, so self-hosting does not mean every feature makes no network requests.

Only share media you are entitled to distribute. Set account access and parental controls for your intended users, review plugin sources, and retain independent backups of your media and server configuration. The server's GPLv2 license is separate from media rights and individual client licenses.

Updating

Back up the complete server data directory before upgrades. Jellyfin 12.0 changes the database and cannot simply be rolled back without restoring a backup. Its official instructions support upgrading from 10.10.7 or 10.11.x, advise removing non-bundled plugins before migration and require a full library scan afterward to restore automatically resolved alternate versions.
