紹介

noTunes is a small macOS menu-bar utility that prevents Apple's Music or iTunes application from remaining open while blocking is enabled. It suits users whose Bluetooth headphones, media controls or other actions unexpectedly launch Apple's player and who prefer another music application.

Blocking and menu-bar controls

Launch noTunes to enable its behavior. A left click on the menu-bar icon toggles blocking; a right click or Control-click opens its menu to hide the icon or quit. When blocking is disabled, Music or iTunes can open normally. Hiding the icon keeps the utility running; it does not uninstall or quit it. If the icon is hidden, Activity Monitor can be used to quit the app.

The implementation watches macOS application-launch notifications and force-terminates processes identified as com.apple.Music or com.apple.iTunes. It can also close an already-running player when noTunes starts or blocking is activated. This is an application-process control utility, not a selective filter that only blocks Bluetooth-triggered launches: intentional launches of Music/iTunes can also be stopped while enabled. Disable or quit noTunes before using Apple's player normally.

Optional replacement application

The project documents a replacement preference that can open an installed application path or website URL when Music or iTunes attempts to launch. This setting uses macOS defaults for the digital.twisted.noTunes domain and the system open command. Configure the intended application's actual path or a trusted URL; the replacement application or website may have its own account, network and subscription requirements.

Replacement behavior is associated with detected launch attempts. It does not remap every media key, transfer the current song to another player or automatically migrate an Apple Music library. Clearing the replacement preference returns to blocking without opening a substitute. The documented preference-reset command for restoring a hidden icon clears the domain rather than only one icon setting, so it can also reset the replacement setting.

Installation, startup and compatibility

Install the notunes Homebrew Cask or extract the official noTunes-3.5.zip and place noTunes.app in Applications. The official ZIP is 1,106,906 bytes according to HTTP HEAD. This is the download archive, not installed disk usage. The Cask declares no additional runtime, dependency, conflict or numeric macOS minimum.

The project states that the application has been built as a universal binary for native Intel and Apple Silicon support since version 2.1. Version 3.5's project includes a macOS 10.12 deployment setting, but this source setting is not a guarantee that every current macOS release or downloaded build has been tested. Use a compatible official release and allow normal macOS application-opening checks. No separate Windows or Linux edition is supplied by this project.

To keep the behavior across logins, add noTunes under System Settings > General > Login Items > Open at Login on macOS Ventura or later; older systems use Users & Groups > Login Items. Installing the app does not itself mean it will run at every login. The utility must be running for blocking to work. The tagged implementation uses NSWorkspace process notifications and forceTerminate and does not request Accessibility, Screen Recording or Full Disk Access as a documented prerequisite; do not grant unrelated permissions merely to use its menu-bar function.

Scope, accounts and license

noTunes does not delete the Music/iTunes application, remove your media library, cancel an Apple Music subscription or change a provider's billing. Force-closing a player can interrupt playback or an active task, so quit or disable the utility when you want that application to operate.

The utility is free and its code is distributed under the MIT license. It does not require an account, paid license or hosted service for blocking. It stores preferences locally and the described blocking mechanism works locally. Opening a replacement website invokes that website's own privacy and service terms.
