Meld for macOS

Meld for macOS packages the Meld visual diff and merge application as a standalone Mac app. It helps developers and other users compare text files, directories and version-controlled projects, review changes and resolve merge conflicts. This Cask uses René de Hesselle's meld_macos packaging project, which aims to consolidate work upstream rather than maintain an independent application fork.

Comparing and merging

Meld provides two- and three-way file comparisons with live updates while editing, navigation between changes, actions on individual change blocks and text filters for irrelevant differences. Three-way merge assistance shows conflicts and the base version. Directory comparisons highlight missing and modified files and let you drill down into file differences or filter unwanted paths.

Version-control views support systems such as Git, Mercurial, Bazaar and Subversion when the corresponding tools and repository are available. Meld can be used as a Git diff or merge tool through explicit configuration. Viewing a difference is separate from writing a merge result, committing or pushing: these actions can change local files or repositories using your existing permissions and credentials. Keep copies of important files and check the intended output path before saving.

Mac packaging and dependencies

The recorded version 3.22.3+105 combines upstream Meld 3.22.3 with Mac packaging build 105. Its package notes update dependencies and modernize the application bundle; upstream 3.22.3 contains separate application fixes. Neither the packaging build number nor a newer upstream website release means that this Cask contains a different Meld version.

The bundle includes the Python/GTK-based application environment. The packaging scripts install Python and PyGObject and assemble the relevant framework resources, so the standalone DMG is not merely a launcher requiring you to separately install all upstream Linux source dependencies with Homebrew. Building or running upstream source directly has its own Python, GTK, GLib, GtkSourceView and Cairo requirements. Version-control integration can still require external command-line tools such as Git; those tools and hosted repository accounts are not bundled service entitlements.

Installation, architecture and startup

Install the meld Homebrew Cask or download the official Mac packaging DMG for your architecture and place Meld.app in Applications. The recorded Apple Silicon arm64 DMG is 38,426,184 bytes by official HTTP HEAD; a separate x86_64 DMG is available for Intel. Download size is not installed disk use. The Cask declares no numeric macOS minimum, extra runtime dependency or explicit Cask conflict.

The packaging project's main README describes a standalone, relocatable app supporting macOS High Sierra through Sequoia. An older 3.22.x README only lists through Sonoma. Treat these as the project's stated compatibility range rather than a guarantee that every later macOS release or CPU configuration was tested. Upstream Meld's website still describes macOS builds as semi-official while also linking newer cross-platform binaries; this specific Cask continues to identify the dehesselle 3.22.3+105 build.

The Cask installs a command wrapper for meld. The packaging documentation also describes optional shell aliases or wrapper scripts for launching the app and warns against symlinking directly to the executable inside the app bundle. Use the supplied Cask wrapper when appropriate; installation does not itself change every Git configuration or shell profile. File comparisons need access to the selected files, and macOS can request authorization for protected Desktop, Documents or Downloads folders. The packaging declares folder-access descriptions; unrelated Screen Recording or Accessibility permission is not documented as a general comparison prerequisite.

License, accounts and platform scope

Meld and this Mac packaging work are free under GPL-2.0-or-later, except for components with their own notices. No Meld account, paid license or subscription is required for local comparisons. Remote Git hosting can require its own account and credentials, and network operations use those services' terms. Linux/Unix and Windows editions are separate upstream distributions; this DMG is the Mac packaging route, not an installer for those systems.

Meld operates on the files and repositories you choose; it is not a cloud backup or a replacement for version-control history. Saving or merging can overwrite content. The packaging project's official screenshot is a historical Mac new-comparison screen, not a verified capture of the exact current build. The icon comes from the acknowledged earlier Meld for OSX project's official repository and represents that historical Mac branding.
