Beyond Compare

Beyond Compare is a file and folder comparison tool for developers, administrators and people reconciling document or backup changes. It highlights differences, supports targeted editing and helps merge or synchronize selected data. The Mac, Windows and Linux editions share core workflows, with some platform-specific viewers and integrations.

Compare, merge and synchronize

Compare text with syntax-aware rules, browse differing folders and inspect images, tables or binary data in dedicated views. Filters can exclude unimportant files or differences. Pro features include advanced merge and integration capabilities; the download contains Standard and Pro functionality, while your license determines permanent access. Folder synchronization and scripts can copy or delete many files, so inspect the operation preview and keep backups before applying changes.

Installation and compatibility

Extract the official Mac ZIP and place Beyond Compare in Applications, or use brew install --cask beyond-compare. The exact5.2.6.32774 Mac ZIP is56,212,663 bytes. Scooter Software's compatibility matrix marks Beyond Compare5 supported on macOS12 Monterey and newer listed releases, while macOS11 and older entries are not supported for version5. The checked sources do not establish a fixed RAM requirement or exact architecture coverage for this catalog ZIP. Larger directory trees and remote comparisons need extra memory, disk space and time. Windows and Linux packages have separate compatibility requirements.

License and connectivity

Beyond Compare is proprietary paid software with a free trial. Standard and Pro are separate license editions; review the current feature comparison and purchasing terms rather than assuming every merge or cloud feature is included in Standard. A website account manages purchases and license retrieval, but local comparison itself is not a cloud-only service. Local files can be compared without uploading them. FTP, cloud storage and other remote locations require network access, credentials and any applicable provider charges. Protect those credentials and verify which endpoint you are synchronizing.

Permissions and risks

Grant file access only to locations you intend to compare or change. macOS protected directories and external volumes can prompt for additional access; ordinary comparison is not a blanket reason for Accessibility or Screen Recording. Scripts and command-line integrations can perform unattended changes, so test them on copies and review exclusions. A merge can produce a syntactically valid but incorrect result; review conflicts and validate important outputs with their owning application or project tests. Updates include archive-library security fixes, so use the official maintained build when working with untrusted archives.
