Descrizione
Weasis is a DICOM viewer for medical-imaging, teaching, research and institutional viewing workflows. It can open local studies and connect to configured imaging systems. The official open-source distribution is not a CE- or FDA-certified medical device; users must establish appropriate authorization and suitability before any diagnostic workflow.
Viewing and study tools
Import DICOM files, directories, ZIP archives or DICOMDIR media; browse patients, studies and series; adjust window/level, zoom, pan, orientation and layouts. Use measurements, annotations, presentation states and linked views. Supported advanced workflows include MPR/MIP, volume rendering, segmentation overlays and PET/CT fusion. Supported formats and geometry vary; inspect source quality, orientation, calibration and lossy-compression indicators before relying on a rendering or measurement.
PACS integration includes classic DICOM query/retrieve/store and DICOMweb QIDO/WADO/STOW. Institutions can configure gateways, authentication and weasis:// links to open studies from portals. Export can write DICOM or derived images and send studies to configured services. Sending/exporting patient data is an intentional disclosure and should follow the institution's access and handling procedures.
Installation and requirements
Use the official architecture-specific PKG and follow the installer, or brew install --cask weasis. The exact 4.7.3 Apple Silicon PKG is 63,966,460 bytes, verified by official-asset HEAD. Installed files, image caches and study data require additional space. The official current Mac guide requires macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon and macOS 11 or later on Intel; choose the corresponding installer.
Native installers include the needed runtime, so a separate Java installation is not required. The 3D viewer requires OpenGL 3.3 or later. macOS uses the fragment-shader/FBO path because its OpenGL support is capped at 4.1; rendering performance differs from compute-shader platforms. In 4.7.3 the interactive FBO view uses reduced rendering resolution while dragging and returns to full resolution afterward. The checked sources do not specify a universal minimum RAM; large studies and 3D textures depend on available memory and GPU texture limits.
Permissions, accounts and network
Grant access to selected local studies or removable media as needed. Institution-managed PKG installation may require administrator approval. The checked installation sources do not establish Accessibility, Screen Recording or Full Disk Access as blanket viewer prerequisites. A local study can be viewed without a cloud account. PACS/DICOMweb and remote preference services require network access and the credentials or OAuth/OpenID Connect configuration chosen by their administrators; downloads and updates also use the network.
Patient identifiers can be present in files, overlays, exports, caches, logs and screenshots. Protect the workstation and storage, limit access and use the institution's supported secure transport. A local viewer is not a guarantee that configured PACS transfers or preference synchronization remain local. Custom volume presets can be uploaded when a remote preference service is configured. Review anonymization results independently before sharing data; removing visible labels alone is not sufficient evidence of de-identification.
License and operational limits
Weasis is free software dual-licensed under EPL-2.0 or Apache-2.0, with third-party dependencies under their respective licenses. A PACS, hosting service or support arrangement may have separate costs and accounts. The viewer does not diagnose conditions automatically or guarantee that every DICOM object is rendered correctly. Keep source studies, validate integrations and measurement workflows and apply updates, especially when using remote manifests or authentication services.
