Eclipse Temurin 11

Eclipse Temurin 11 is the Eclipse Adoptium distribution of the OpenJDK Java 11 development kit. It provides a HotSpot Java runtime, compiler and development tools for applications and build systems that specifically require Java 11. It is a command-line runtime and SDK rather than a desktop application with its own editor or graphical workbench.

Java 11 development and application use

The JDK can run compatible Java applications and compile Java source through tools such as java and javac. Temurin releases undergo Java compatibility testing and the Adoptium AQAvit verification suite. Applications, IDEs, Maven/Gradle builds and server software still have their own Java version requirements and configuration.

This package stays on the Java 11 line. It is not Java 8 and does not automatically install the newest Java feature release. Java 11 cannot run class files compiled for a newer Java runtime; software dependent on removed Java 8 components can also need migration. OpenJFX is a separate project and JavaFX is not bundled with Temurin 11. Java Web Start/IcedTea-Web is likewise not bundled with Temurin 11. Obtain the specific compatible additional components your application needs rather than assuming an Oracle JDK 8 environment is reproduced unchanged.

Installation, architecture and selecting a JDK

Install the temurin@11 Cask or use the official macOS PKG matching your CPU. The recorded Apple Silicon installer is the aarch64 HotSpot JDK 11.0.32.1+1 package, with a HEAD download size of 184,998,979 bytes. This is the PKG archive size, not installed disk use. Intel uses a separate x64 build; the native aarch64 package does not need Rosetta solely to run its own Java tools. An Intel-only Java application or native library can still have different architecture requirements.

The official macOS installer places the JDK under /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines. Installer authorization is separate from the permissions of Java programs you later run. Prebuilt JDK installation does not require Xcode or building OpenJDK from source. The Cask declares no extra runtime dependency, explicit conflict or numeric macOS minimum. Consult Adoptium's current supported-platform matrix for the chosen Java version and architecture; do not infer current Catalina support from old Java 11 documentation, since Adoptium announced that macOS x64 10.15 was no longer supported in 2023. The cited platform documentation does not establish a precise numeric minimum for this build.

Multiple Java major versions and vendors can coexist, but the Java chosen by a terminal, IDE or service depends on its configuration. Set JAVA_HOME to the intended JDK home and align PATH or the application's JDK selector when needed; macOS /usr/libexec/java_home can identify installed JDKs, including a Java 11 selection. Changing a terminal setting does not automatically change an already-running service or every IDE. Check the Java major, full update/build and architecture required by your project before switching.

License, accounts and support

Temurin binaries are free under GNU GPL version 2 with the Classpath Exception, with the included component notices. They can be used for personal and commercial workloads under those terms without purchasing a Temurin runtime subscription. The Classpath Exception is relevant to linking ordinary application code with covered library code; it does not remove every GPL obligation when redistributing modified covered code.

No Adoptium account or paid activation is required to download and use the base JDK. Community support is provided on a best-effort basis. Organizations that need guaranteed response times or service-level commitments can purchase support from third-party providers under separate contracts; free runtime availability is not the same as included commercial support. Java applications you install may independently require accounts, network services or licenses.

Java programs execute with the permissions of the user or service running them, can access files or networks as allowed by that environment, and need their own security review and updates. Temurin is not a sandbox that makes all Java applications safe. Keep an appropriate supported update level for Java 11 and validate application compatibility after updates.
