Opera

Opera is a proprietary Chromium-based web browser from Opera Norway AS. This Cask installs the regular stable desktop browser, also marketed as Opera One, rather than Opera GX, Opera Air or a mobile browser. It suits people who want integrated tab organization, sidebar services and optional privacy tools alongside ordinary web browsing.

Browsing and organization

Browse websites, manage bookmarks and downloads, and organize related tabs into Tab Islands. Horizontal and vertical tab layouts and split-screen browsing help compare pages and keep work grouped. The sidebar provides access to supported messaging and other web services, which retain their own accounts, availability and terms. Compatible extensions can extend the browser, but an extension's permissions can expose browsing data or alter pages; review its origin and requested access.

The built-in ad blocker and tracker controls can be adjusted per site. The Acceptable Ads setting can allow qualifying advertising when enabled. Private browsing limits local session records but does not make you anonymous to websites, employers or network operators. The free built-in VPN protects supported browser traffic rather than every application on your Mac. It is distinct from the optional paid VPN Pro service. A VPN does not guarantee anonymity or prevent every form of tracking. Opera AI and other online assistance send requests to services and should not receive confidential material without reviewing their terms and privacy controls.

Mac installation and platform requirements

Install the opera Homebrew Cask or download the official Mac DMG, mount it and copy Opera.app to Applications. Official HEAD reports 262,897,561 bytes for the recorded 137.0.6036.39 DMG; this is installer download size, not installed storage or cached web data. Opera distributes separate Windows, Mac and Linux builds, with separate mobile products.

Opera's current general requirements page lists macOS 12 or later. The recorded Homebrew Cask requires macOS 13 or later, so that stricter condition applies to installation through this Cask. Opera officially introduced native Apple Silicon support alongside Intel support; the Cask uses one Mac DMG URL rather than separate CPU URLs. This does not establish compatibility with every older Mac, graphics driver or extension. The recorded Cask declares no additional dependencies or explicit conflicting Cask; that is not a claim that all systems are supported.

You can choose whether to make Opera the system default browser. Websites can request camera, microphone, location or notification access; grant only the permissions needed. macOS protected-file access may be requested when selecting downloads or uploads. Routine browsing does not establish a universal Accessibility or Screen Recording requirement. Imported bookmarks, passwords, extensions and synchronized data deserve the same care as data in any browser. Keep recovery information and independent copies of important files rather than treating browser sync as a complete backup.

Accounts, cost and license

The desktop browser is free to use under Opera's proprietary end-user license; Chromium and bundled third-party components have separate notices. This is not an open-source license for the whole Opera product. No Opera account is required for ordinary local browsing. An Opera account is used for optional synchronization, while messaging, websites and other connected services can require their own logins. Paid VPN Pro and other optional services have separate subscriptions, eligibility and terms; installing the free browser does not include those subscriptions. Privacy features do not replace website security, account protection or careful handling of downloads.
