Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader is Adobe's free, proprietary desktop PDF viewer. It is for people who need to read and print PDFs, review documents with comments, and complete or sign forms without purchasing the full Acrobat editing subscription.

Reading, review and forms

Open PDFs, navigate pages, search document text, print documents and add annotations for review. Fill supported PDF forms and use Fill & Sign for basic signatures. A drawn or typed signature is not automatically the same as a certificate-based digital signature or a paid managed e-signature transaction. Reader preserves the distinction between viewing and commenting on a PDF and changing its original text or images.

Editing existing PDF content, converting documents, organizing pages and other premium tools depend on an eligible Acrobat plan or entitlement. Buttons advertising premium tools do not mean those features are included in free Reader. Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Studio are separate paid offerings; Reader is not an open-source alternative with all Pro features unlocked.

Installation and Mac requirements

Install the adobe-acrobat-reader Homebrew Cask or download Reader from Adobe's official download center. This recorded Cask installs a package from a multilingual DMG, rather than merely copying an app bundle; macOS can require administrator authorization for its installer and supporting update components. The recorded 26.001.21662 DMG is 713,009,115 bytes by official HTTP HEAD. This is download size, not installed disk usage, and is distinct from the smaller incremental update images listed in Adobe's enterprise release notes.

The recorded Cask requires macOS 13 or later and lists both Intel and ARM64 Mac platforms. Adobe's Reader requirements page separately lists Intel and M1 Apple Silicon processors, 2 GB RAM, 380 MB free disk space, and macOS 12 through 15; that page's older OS list should not be treated as evidence that the current Cask installs on macOS 12 or as a complete list of every newer supported release. Allow extra space for the package, updates and your documents. Adobe documents native Apple Silicon execution and circumstances in which Acrobat can use Rosetta; this package has no Cask Rosetta prerequisite, and an individual plug-in or feature may have separate compatibility conditions. Windows and mobile Reader editions are separate applications, not contained in this Mac installer.

The Cask lists Adobe updater packages and helper services. Automatic updates and cloud features can use network access. Opening files in protected folders may trigger macOS file-access authorization; camera or microphone access is not a general prerequisite for reading PDFs. Select only the document access you need. The Cask has no explicit conflict declaration, but installing Reader is not a license to replace or remove an existing paid Acrobat deployment. Managed organizations should follow their approved Adobe installation and update policy.

Accounts, paid services and privacy

Adobe states that free Reader downloaded through its Reader Download Center does not require sign-in for individual use. Cloud storage, sharing and online services can require an Adobe account and internet access; enterprise deployments can impose their own policies. Keep local documents local by avoiding optional upload or cloud workflows when they are not appropriate for the document.

Acrobat AI Assistant is a separate paid entitlement or add-on, subject to plan eligibility, trial limits and service availability. Installing free Reader does not include unlimited AI requests, a Pro subscription or paid e-signature services. AI and cloud features process documents through online services under Adobe's terms; do not assume they run entirely on the Mac. Current prices and bundled entitlements vary by region and plan, so consult Adobe before purchase.

License and updates

Reader is free to download and use without a subscription under Adobe's proprietary license terms. Redistribution and organizational deployment can have separate Adobe licensing conditions; free download does not make its source code open or permit unrestricted redistribution. The recorded versions are Continuous-track Reader releases, distinct from Acrobat Classic and perpetual Acrobat products.
