Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote organizes information into notebooks, sections and pages. It suits students, researchers and teams who want to combine typed notes, images, attachments and organized reference material. The Mac client connects with a Microsoft account and the cloud notebook services supported by that account.

Notes and collaboration

Arrange pages, search notebook content and share a notebook with appropriate collaborators. The publisher promotes note organization, ink and multimedia workflows, but available tools can differ between Mac, Windows and web versions. A feature shown in a general Microsoft 365 campaign is not a guarantee that every OneNote Mac build implements it identically.

Cloud synchronization allows access across supported devices. It depends on the account, server and storage allowance. Local availability of a previously synchronized page is different from a fresh shared notebook or an attachment that has not downloaded. Confirm synchronization before switching devices or relying on an offline copy.

Installation and version mapping

Use the publisher's Mac package or brew install --cask microsoft-onenote. The selected official updater package is 628,294,615 bytes. Its catalog version 16.113.26100421 corresponds to Microsoft's 16.113.4 build 26100421, not an unrelated release number. Microsoft distinguishes an update package for an existing installation from a full suite installation package. Follow the appropriate installer route for your current Mac rather than treating a PKG as an app to drag into Applications.

Microsoft's current Mac update policy requires macOS 14 or later, consistent with the Mac App Store listing and cask. Microsoft explicitly includes OneNote among Universal Mac applications supporting Intel and Apple Silicon. These are publisher-supported requirements, not findings from inspecting this updater's Info.plist or Mach-O payload; individual bundled dependencies have not been exhaustively audited. OS support policy can change independently of a package's minimum. Choose the publisher's supported distribution for your system. No additional formula dependency is declared by the cask; a Node runtime, developer SDK or full Office suite is not automatically required simply to use the packaged note client.

Accounts, permissions and connectivity

Sign in with the appropriate personal, work or school Microsoft account and use the storage and notebook locations authorized by that account. OneNote itself has free use options; Microsoft 365 subscriptions, organizational services, Copilot and additional storage can have separate fees and eligibility. A free app download does not grant a paid AI or Office entitlement.

Network access is used for sign-in, synchronization, sharing and updates. A work account can be subject to organization policy, multifactor authentication and managed-device rules. File import and export need access to selected files. Optional audio recording or dictation needs the relevant microphone permission; notifications need authorization if used. These workflows are not a reason to grant all macOS privacy permissions by default.

License and data risks

OneNote is proprietary Microsoft software governed by the applicable software and service terms. Documents, audio, scanned material and handwritten content can contain personal or confidential information. Review notebook sharing, account selection, organization retention and storage limits before uploading it. Keep private material out of a shared notebook and check the collaborator list when access changes.

Sync conflicts, account removal or storage failures can affect availability. Maintain a suitable backup or export strategy for important work; synchronization is not an independent backup. Review OCR or generated text before relying on names, numbers or quotations. Screenshots and diagnostic reports can expose notebook titles, account identities or selected page content.

Release evidence limit

The latest three exact build mappings are confirmed in Microsoft's release table. Each OneNote-specific release entry provides only quality and performance wording. No unnamed fix, security CVE or feature change is invented, and an Outlook fix listed for the same Office build is not presented as a OneNote improvement.
