Présentation

Dropbox is the desktop client for Dropbox's cloud file-storage and synchronization service. It gives individuals and teams a Dropbox folder in Finder, background synchronization, sharing tools and controls for how much content stays on the Mac. It is a proprietary service client, not a standalone local encryption vault or an included unlimited backup subscription.

Files, synchronization and collaboration

Files placed in the Dropbox folder synchronize with your Dropbox account and other linked devices. Finder integration shows sync status and offers sharing and file-availability actions. Use selective sync to choose which folders are present on a particular computer, and use online-only or available-offline settings where supported to manage local disk space. Opening an online-only file requires a download and a working connection; a placeholder is not an independent offline copy.

Shared folders and links enable collaboration according to the account's permissions and plan. Changes and deletions in a synchronized folder can propagate to the cloud and other devices. Version history and deleted-file recovery depend on plan terms and retention windows. Maintain an independent backup of important data; ordinary Dropbox sync should not be confused with a guaranteed archive or the separate Dropbox Backup feature. Wait for synchronization to complete before relying on another device's copy.

Mac installation and architecture

Install the dropbox Homebrew Cask or use Dropbox's official Mac download. The recorded Apple Silicon 272.4.3798 offline DMG is 380,376,007 bytes by official HTTP HEAD. The vendor also provides Intel and universal installer routes; download size is separate from disk usage for the app and locally stored files. Sign in to a Dropbox account to link the desktop client, choose the relevant folders and review file-availability settings. The app continues working in the background and needs network access for cloud synchronization and updates.

Dropbox's system requirements specify macOS 11 Big Sur or later for the full desktop experience, a Mac capable of running the chosen OS, and an HFS+ or APFS-formatted drive with extended attributes enabled. The older macOS 10.13–10.15 route is a simplified client, not the same full current experience. Dropbox on Apple's File Provider requires macOS 12.5 or later, and the vendor recommends the latest macOS. The recorded Cask has no numeric minimum but explicitly conflicts with dropbox@beta; do not install competing stable and beta Casks together. Windows, Linux and mobile apps are separate distributions.

File Provider and permissions

The current Mac File Provider integration uses Apple's API to manage online-only files and integrate with Finder. Eligibility and migration depend on your account, system and configuration. Review Dropbox's current migration instructions rather than moving its active folder manually. Switching implementations can require downloading offline content again, and external-drive support has its own conditions.

The recorded Cask still contains a blanket kernel-extension caveat. That historical caveat should not be interpreted as a requirement to reduce Mac security for every current File Provider installation. Follow the vendor's instructions for the implementation actually in use. Folder access, Finder extensions, background operation and any requested privacy permissions depend on the chosen features. Dropbox's troubleshooting documentation describes Full Disk Access for older macOS configurations; grant access only when required for your intended folders or backup workflow. Ordinary file sync is not a general Screen Recording task.

Account, cost and license

The desktop app requires a Dropbox account for cloud synchronization. Dropbox Basic is free and includes 2 GB of storage; its current device policy permits three linked desktop or mobile devices. Paid individual and team plans provide different capacity, recovery, administration and sharing entitlements. Team administrators can impose additional access rules. Installing the app does not purchase a subscription or remove account quotas, and storage prices vary by plan and region.

The app and service use Dropbox's proprietary license and service terms. Cloud files are processed and stored by the service under its privacy and security policies; do not assume Dropbox is an end-to-end encrypted local-only vault. Optional Dropbox Backup, Dash, Sign and other products have separate feature and licensing conditions. Protect account credentials and review link permissions before sharing sensitive content.
