GitHub Copilot for Xcode

GitHub Copilot for Xcode brings GitHub's AI coding assistance into Apple's development environment. It is intended for developers working on Swift, Objective-C, iOS and macOS projects who want code suggestions, conversational help and assisted changes without leaving their Xcode workflow.

Feature and model availability depend on the installed extension, account entitlement, organization policy and selected service. The extension's MIT-licensed source does not make the hosted Copilot service an unrestricted local AI system.

Installation and requirements

Install the official DMG and move GitHub Copilot for Xcode.app into Applications, or use brew install --cask github-copilot-for-xcode. Official requirements are macOS 13 or later, Xcode 14 or later and a GitHub account. The current Homebrew cask also requires macOS 13. Restart Xcode after installing an extension update. The publisher recommends disabling Xcode's predictive completion to avoid competing suggestions.

The project documents three required permissions: Background, Accessibility and Xcode Source Editor Extension. Enable the editor extension in macOS settings and check that GitHub Copilot appears under Xcode's Editor menu. Accessibility supports the integration with the editor; do not interpret this as a blanket requirement for Full Disk Access. Sign-in uses GitHub's browser authorization flow. Xcode is an external prerequisite rather than an application bundled in the cask. No named cask conflict is declared. The checked sources do not establish the downloaded DMG's exact CPU architectures, so architecture parity is not asserted.

Accounts, network and cost

This extension requires a GitHub account and access to the relevant Copilot service. Hosted suggestions and chat require network access; this is not an offline local model application. Copilot plan availability, usage allowances, paid subscriptions and organization controls are governed by GitHub's current service terms. The extension itself is distributed as MIT-licensed open-source software. Bring Your Own Key support can incur separate model-provider charges and requires the relevant provider credentials. Do not equate a free extension download with unlimited free inference.

Data and practical cautions

Code, prompts and supplied project context are processed as part of the selected AI service workflow. Consult GitHub's privacy statement and your organization's policy before using confidential repositories, customer data or credentials. Agent Mode can change files and run terminal commands, while configured MCP tools may access additional services. Review proposed actions, tool permissions and generated code, and keep version-controlled backups before broad edits. Suggestions can be inaccurate or inappropriate for a project; test and review changes before release.
