Beschreibung
Charles is a web debugging proxy for developers, QA engineers and support specialists investigating browser, mobile-app and API traffic. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.
Debugging features
- Inspect request and response headers, cookies, bodies and timing in structured and sequential views.
- Decode supported HTTPS traffic using explicitly configured SSL proxying.
- Simulate slower connections through bandwidth and latency throttling.
- Repeat requests, set breakpoints and rewrite or map requests to test application behavior.
- Import or export sessions and HAR data, and filter saved sessions through command-line tools.
- Inspect HTTP/2 and supported encoded payloads, including zstd in the current major version.
Installation and requirements
Download the official macOS DMG, copy Charles to Applications and launch it, or use brew install --cask charles. The exact 5.2.1 DMG is 83,227,158 bytes, verified by HTTP HEAD against its official version-specific asset. Captured bodies, saved sessions and temporary files need additional disk space. Read-only inspection of the exact official DMG confirms a universal x86_64 and arm64 launcher. Its bundle declares macOS 10.9, but that launcher declaration alone does not establish the minimum for the bundled Java runtime; the checked download and installation material and current cask do not establish a numeric minimum macOS version or minimum RAM for this exact release. The application includes its Java runtime, so a separately installed JDK is not normally required for the packaged application. The cask declares no named conflict; other proxy tools and VPN configurations can affect traffic routing.
Setup, trust and accounts
Charles can configure the system proxy where supported; initial proxy setup may require administrative authorization. Other devices need a reachable proxy address and explicit configuration. HTTPS decryption requires installing and trusting Charles's root certificate on the relevant test device and enabling SSL proxying for selected hosts. Apps with certificate pinning may reject interception. Trusting a debugging CA changes the device's security boundary: use controlled test systems and remove the trust when it is no longer needed.
Charles is commercial proprietary software with a free trial and paid licenses. A cloud account is not needed for local proxy inspection; purchasing, activating or checking for updates has separate network needs. The application must reach the servers it proxies, but saved sessions can be inspected locally. The checked sources do not establish blanket Accessibility, Screen Recording or Full Disk Access as prerequisites.
Privacy and practical risks
Sessions may contain authorization tokens, cookies, personal data and complete request or response bodies. Capture only traffic you are authorized to inspect, restrict remote proxy access and redact files before sharing them. Proxying or rewriting can change application behavior, and leaving system proxy settings pointing at a stopped proxy can interrupt connectivity. Disable recording and restore proxy settings after testing. Do not treat a successful request through Charles as proof that the original production network or certificate validation behaves identically.
