Azul Zulu Java8 SE JDK
Azul Systems, Inc. · Free OpenJDK8 development kit from Azul for applications and development tools requiring Java8, with architecture-specific Mac installers.
Azul Zulu Java8 SE JDK is Languages & Runtimes software for Mac.
About
Azul Zulu Java8 SE JDK is a Java Development Kit based on OpenJDK8, provided by Azul. It contains the Java runtime, compiler and development tools for building and running applications that require Java8. It is a command-line/runtime distribution, not a desktop IDE or an application launcher with its own general-purpose GUI.
Java version and distribution
This package tracks the Java8 line rather than the latest major Java release. The current tuple8.0.504,8.96.0.205 identifies OpenJDK8u504-b01 delivered by Azul Zulu8.96.0.205 Community Availability. Zulu's distribution version differs from the Java version an application reports. A record containing only8.0.504 represents the same upstream Java update, not an additional distinct release.
This is the standard JDK bundle, not the separately distributed JavaFX bundle. JavaFX-dependent applications may require the appropriate FX distribution or additional application-supported components. Azul Zulu, Azul Platform Prime and Eclipse Temurin are different distributions; Java8 compatibility does not make every vendor extension, installer path or support entitlement interchangeable.
Installation and architecture
The current Apple Silicon download is an ARM64 DMG of106,248,788 bytes. Intel Macs use a separate x64 download. Select the architecture appropriate to both the Mac and the application: native ARM64 avoids running the JDK itself through Rosetta, while Intel-only applications or native libraries may need an x64 JDK and Rosetta on Apple Silicon. Native libraries must match the process architecture.
The DMG contains the Azul Zulu JDK8 PKG installer. Follow the installer and approve administrator authorization when requested. The cask declares no additional package dependencies and no explicit macOS version minimum; this does not establish compatibility with every historical macOS release. Azul's August2026 support matrix lists macOS14+ for Intel and Apple Silicon. Consult that matrix and the consuming application's requirements before choosing a build.
Installed JDKs are registered under macOS's JavaVirtualMachines location. Multiple major versions and vendors can coexist, but tools must select the intended one. Set JAVA_HOME or configure the IDE/build tool explicitly, using macOS's java_home discovery for Java8 where appropriate. Do not assume that installing this cask changes every terminal, IDE or application to Java8. Some applications bundle their own runtime and ignore the system JDK.
Free use and commercial services
This is a Community Availability build that is free to download and use, including commercial use under its license. OpenJDK code uses GPLv2 with the Classpath Exception, with additional bundled-component license notices. The exception permits independent applications using the covered libraries to retain their own licensing; review distribution obligations if modifying or redistributing the JDK.
No paid account or subscription is required for the public CA download. Azul's supported Subscriber Availability builds, commercial compatibility components and support services have separate terms and costs. Platform Prime is a separate performance-oriented offering and is not included in this standard Zulu JDK. Free availability does not include a commercial support contract.
Maintenance and compatibility
Apply suitable Java8 security updates and test applications, fonts, TLS behavior and native dependencies after an update. The July2026 update removes bundled Monotype Lucida fonts from Zulu8; applications depending on those fonts may need separately licensed compatibility components or another supported font configuration. Updating the JDK cannot guarantee that an old application is secure or compatible with every newer macOS version.

Installation verification workflow
Azul's official macOS installation guide instructs users to copy the download checksum, calculate SHA-256 locally and compare the values before unpacking an archive. The accompanying publisher image shows the website checksum-copy dialog for that workflow. Its example concerns a different Zulu major/package, not the current Java 8 DMG checksum or a Java runtime window. Use the checksum for the exact Java 8 file you downloaded.
