Eclipse Temurin 8

Eclipse Temurin 8 is Eclipse Adoptium's OpenJDK-based Java 8 distribution. This cask installs the Java Development Kit (JDK), including the HotSpot JVM, Java runtime and development tools such as javac. It is not an IDE, a JavaFX distribution or a browser Java plug-in, and it does not install another Java LTS version in place of Java 8.

Install and choose Java 8

Install with brew install --cask temurin@8, or run the official Temurin 8 Mac PKG. The installer requires the appropriate administrator authorization and installs under /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines. It is a runtime and toolchain, not a graphical editor you launch from Applications.

Check java -version and javac -version to see which Java your shell selects. /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8 can locate an installed Java 8 home on macOS; configure your shell, IDE or build tool to use the intended JDK. Different projects may require different major versions. Installing this cask does not guarantee that every tool automatically switches to Java 8, and removing an unrelated JDK is not necessary merely to choose this one.

Use Java 8 for software that explicitly supports or requires it. Applications compiled for newer Java versions may not run on Java 8. Maven, Gradle, IDEs and application frameworks are separate programs with their own version requirements. Review project build instructions and test compatibility rather than treating all Java releases as interchangeable.

Version and Mac architecture

The captured cask version 8,504,01 maps to Java 8 update 504, build 01: official tag jdk8u504-b01. Likewise 8,502,07 means 8u502-b07 and 8,492,09 means 8u492-b09. These comma-separated components are the Java major/update/build tuple, not unrelated installer hashes or three independent application versions.

This Mac cask downloads the x64 Intel HotSpot JDK package. It is not a Universal binary or native Apple Silicon Java 8 package. The cask flags Rosetta 2 as necessary on Apple Silicon; arrange that prerequisite through macOS before relying on the Intel runtime. Adoptium's support matrix lists Java 8 on Intel macOS 12, 13, 14 and 15, and does not list native Java 8 Apple Silicon support. Rosetta execution should not be confused with a vendor guarantee for a native ARM build. No broader current minimum or future-Mac support guarantee is inferred from the cask's platform list.

The current x64 Mac JDK PKG is 108,186,703 bytes, confirmed by the official asset metadata and HTTP headers. This is download size, not installed disk usage. No universal RAM or installed-space minimum is asserted: Java application workloads and heap settings determine resource use. Java 8 builds for other operating systems use separate packages; this Mac installer is not a Windows or Linux installer.

Updates and security

Temurin publishes Java 8 updates separately from newer JDK lines. Keep the installed update/build current within the Java 8 line and evaluate application compatibility after changes. The official release assets include machine-readable Java 8 change lists and package checksums. Verify downloads against the chosen release and do not infer Java 17, 21 or later features from a multi-version Adoptium announcement.

The JDK can execute Java code with your user account's file and network access. Run applications and build scripts from trusted sources and review their permissions. Basic local compilation and execution can work offline; dependency downloads, remote services and updates need network access. A security update does not make arbitrary Java code safe or remove the need to update the application itself.

Price, accounts and license

Temurin binaries are available at no cost under GNU GPL version 2 with the Classpath Exception, with bundled components retaining their applicable notices. No Adoptium account, subscription or purchase is required to download and use this JDK. The Classpath Exception and included license terms are distinct from Oracle JDK commercial licensing. Optional support from a vendor, donations, IDEs and third-party applications may involve separate contracts or charges.
