Azul Zulu JDK 21
Azul Systems, Inc. · Azul’s OpenJDK Java 21 development kit for compiling and running Java applications on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
About
Azul Zulu 21 is Azul's distribution of the OpenJDK Java 21 development kit. This package is specifically the zulu@21 Cask, intended for developing and running applications that require Java 21. It suits Java developers, build-tool users and administrators who need a particular Java major version rather than whichever JDK is currently the default download.
Development kit and version identity
The JDK includes the Java runtime, compiler and standard development, diagnostics and packaging tools. It is not an IDE, application server or browser Java plugin. IDEs, Maven or Gradle builds and Java applications remain separate, and each may impose its own Java-version requirements.
The recorded version is Java 21.0.12.1 with Azul build 21.52.203, corresponding to OpenJDK 21.0.12.1+1. These identify different version schemes: Java 21 is the major line, 21.0.12.1 is the Java update level, and 21.52.203 is Azul's build identifier. The package name contains ca-jdk and has no -fx- suffix; it is the Community Availability JDK, not a separately bundled OpenJFX or CRaC distribution. Features documented for other majors or special bundles do not automatically apply to this package.
Install and select a JDK
Install with brew install --cask zulu@21, or obtain the matching official DMG, mount it and run its JDK 21 package installer. The package installer can request administrator authorization because it installs into the system Java virtual-machine directory. The official Mac guide identifies the JDK home as /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/zulu-21.jdk/Contents/Home for this major line.
After installation, inspect the selected runtime with java -version and the compiler with javac -version. /usr/libexec/java_home -V lists JDKs recognized by macOS. Configure JAVA_HOME and the PATH or an IDE's project JDK deliberately for the application you intend to run. Selecting major 21 through java_home alone may not distinguish Azul from another vendor's Java 21 installation; verify the returned path and runtime version.
The Cask declares no formal conflicting Cask, and different JDK major versions or vendors can coexist. Coexistence does not ensure the correct runtime is selected: PATH, JAVA_HOME, IDE settings and build-tool configuration can disagree. Installing a newer update of this same Zulu major can replace the same major-version location, so do not assume each patch remains independently installed. Existing programs are not automatically migrated or made compatible by installing this JDK.
Platforms and resources
This Mac Cask selects aarch64 for Apple Silicon and x64 for Intel. Choose native architecture for the software you use; Java native libraries and JNI dependencies must be compatible with the runtime architecture. Official April, July and August 2026 support tables list macOS 14 or later for both Intel and Apple Silicon. The recorded Cask itself does not declare a numeric minimum, which is not a guarantee of official support on older macOS releases.
Azul also distributes platform-specific Windows and Linux builds, but this Cask installs the macOS package only. The 21.52.203 Apple Silicon DMG is 207,916,356 bytes according to an official HTTP HEAD request. This transfer size excludes installed space, applications, build caches and heap requirements. RAM and disk requirements depend on the programs and builds that use Java. The Cask declares no extra formula dependency.
Security and operation
A JDK executes Java programs with the permissions of the account running them. It does not isolate arbitrary applications from local files or network resources by default. Download applications and libraries from appropriate sources, review their permissions and update the selected JDK when security fixes are available. Applying a new JDK does not replace updates to the application's own dependencies.
Java 21 is an LTS line, but specific update and support entitlements depend on the distribution and support arrangement. Quarterly PSU releases include security and non-security changes; monthly Critical Security Patch Updates can address urgent issues between quarters. The comma-suffixed and bare 21.0.12.1 records identify the same upstream update, not two independently described releases.
Cost, account and license
Community Availability builds are free to download and use and do not require an Azul subscription account for normal local operation. Azul offers separate paid commercial support and Subscriber Availability distributions. Installing this free Cask does not activate a support contract, paid tools or every feature offered in supported or special builds.
OpenJDK portions are licensed under GPL version 2 with the Classpath Exception, with additional third-party notices and component-specific terms. The exception permits appropriate linking with independent application modules under their own terms; it does not remove all obligations for modifying or redistributing the JDK itself. Consult the included legal notices and the version's third-party license list for redistribution requirements.
The icon is Azul's official organization brand mark. The illustration is a historical official Mac download-guide checksum dialog, not a running JDK application or the checksum for this version. A JDK has no standalone desktop workspace comparable to an IDE.
