WordCraft
ArtCraft · Open-source Rust word processor with DOCX editing, styles, tables, track changes, mail merge and PDF export.
About
Overview
WordCraft is an independent, open-source word processor from the ArtCraft team, written in Rust. Its ribbon, styles and document workflow are familiar to Word users, but it is not a Microsoft product. It reads and writes DOCX, supports ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown and plain text, and exports PDF with selectable text, links and bookmarks.
Writing and document design
Use paragraph and character formatting, multilevel lists, tables, headers and footers, page numbering, themes and watermarks. References include tables of contents, footnotes and bibliographies. Review tools include comments, track changes, accept/reject and offline spelling and grammar. CSV mail merge supports letters, envelopes and labels. The separate CLI and MCP server support document automation; installing the desktop cask does not establish that the CLI is on PATH.
Install and first launch
On macOS with Homebrew installed:
brew install --cask wordcraft
open -a WordCraft
Alternatively download the exact 0.3.0 universal DMG, open it and copy WordCraft.app to Applications. The universal app supports Apple silicon and Intel. Open a DOCX file or start with a blank document/template; save a copy before testing complex existing files.
Requirements and source setup
The cask declares no explicit minimum macOS version; an exact runtime minimum is not established by that metadata. The native UI uses GPU rendering. Source builds require Git and Rust/Cargo 1.90 or newer:
git clone https://github.com/storytold/wordcraft
cd wordcraft
git checkout v0.3.0
cargo run --release -p wordcraft -- --sample
cargo run --release -p wordcraft -- report.docx
Native builds also exist for Windows, Linux and BSD, plus a WebAssembly frontend. This listing describes the macOS cask, not a browser service.
Limitations and license
This is an early 0.x project, not a complete Word replacement. Upstream lists native printing, real-world DOCX fidelity, charts, SmartArt, equations and drawing among unfinished areas; test important documents. MIT or Apache-2.0 licensing applies to the code; bundled assets have separate notices. Backend/Homebrew currently records 0.3.0 even though upstream also publishes 0.4.0; no catalog version change is proposed.
