Visual Studio Code Insiders
Microsoft · Preview upcoming VS Code editor features with frequent builds, extensions, debugging and integrated developer tools.
About
Visual Studio Code Insiders is Microsoft's frequently updated preview edition of VS Code. It suits developers who want to test upcoming editor and extension behavior and report problems before stable releases. It provides code editing, navigation, integrated terminal and debugging, source-control integration and an extension ecosystem; language support often depends on installed extensions and external toolchains.
Install and choose the correct build
Extract the official Mac ZIP and move Visual Studio Code - Insiders to Applications, or use brew install --cask visual-studio-code@insiders. The catalog's ARM64 ZIP at commit 35c48f9946eecf40beed751940607f184a03b6de is exactly 329,945,982 bytes. It is for Apple Silicon; Intel and universal downloads are separate. The official requirements recommend a 1.6 GHz or faster processor and 1 GB RAM, and list macOS 12 or later. Projects, language servers, extensions and agent workloads can need substantially more memory and disk space. Install the appropriate compiler/runtime separately for your language.
Preview behavior and version evidence
Insiders changes frequently and can be installed alongside stable VS Code. Keep important projects under version control and expect regressions or extension incompatibilities. A paginated catalog check identifies the latest three distinct bases as 1.142.0-insider, 1.141.0-insider and 1.140.0-insider. Selected source changes below are tied to concrete commits that Microsoft’s update API explicitly identifies as Insiders 1.142.0, 1.141.0 and 1.140.0. The 1.142 example uses this catalog download’s exact commit; older examples establish their numbered Insiders families rather than proving every historical daily build contains the change. These are selected source changes, not exhaustive release notes or stable-tag substitutions. Windows build-tool changes are not Mac runtime requirements.
Accounts, permissions and network
Local editing needs no Microsoft account. Settings Sync, GitHub Copilot and remote/service integrations may require accounts, network access and separate service terms. Updates and extension downloads use networking; telemetry can be configured through the documented controls. Grant file access for the folders you open and review extension permissions. Terminals, debugging, tasks and installed extensions can run code on your machine, and remote development needs an appropriate SSH/container/server environment rather than being included as a ready-made remote computer.
License, privacy and practical risks
The Microsoft-distributed binary is free to use under Microsoft's VS Code product license; the underlying Code - OSS source uses MIT licensing. Extensions and AI services can have their own licenses or paid limits. Use Workspace Trust when opening unfamiliar repositories, inspect scripts before running them and review where remote extensions or AI features send source files and prompts. Preview updates do not guarantee compatibility or safety of third-party extensions. The official screenshot is an older Windows Insiders interface and illustrates the editor, not the exact Mac build or current layout.
