About
UTM is a graphical virtual-machine app for macOS. It uses QEMU and can also use Apple’s virtualization framework, providing a Mac interface for setting up and running virtualized or emulated operating systems.
- On Apple Silicon, UTM can virtualize ARM64 operating systems; on Intel Macs, it can virtualize x86/x64 systems. Emulation enables other processor and operating-system combinations, with performance depending on the workload.
- It can emulate older operating systems and processor types including ARM32, MIPS, PowerPC, SPARC, and RISC-V.
- On Apple Silicon, it supports macOS virtual machines. The official site limits this capability to ARM-based Macs running macOS Monterey or later.
- The Homebrew
utm@betacask installsUTM.appand provides theutmctlcommand-line tool. It accepts both stable and pre-release releases, so it may install a beta or other pre-release build.
Install with brew install --cask utm@beta. The cask requires macOS 12 or later and conflicts with the separate utm cask. UTM does not currently provide GPU acceleration for Windows virtual machines. The official site describes hardware OpenGL acceleration on Linux through Virgl as experimental.
