About

Ungoogled Chromium is a community-maintained Chromium modification that removes dependency on Google web services while retaining the familiar Chromium browsing experience. This Mac cask uses prebuilt packages from the project's dedicated macOS packaging repository, not a Google Chrome release or a browser binary built by the core patch repository itself.

Main features

  • Browse websites using the Chromium rendering engine and familiar tabbed interface.
  • Remove or disable Google-specific integration and background-service components.
  • Block substituted internal Google service requests.
  • Offer additional flags for privacy, control and transparency, many requiring manual activation.
  • Use Chromium-compatible extensions through the project's documented installation workflow.
  • Provide native Apple Silicon and Intel Mac packages.

Install and start

Install this Mac cask with brew install --cask ungoogled-chromium, or choose the official macOS packaging repository's DMG for your architecture and move Chromium.app into Applications. The application is named Chromium, so this cask conflicts with the chromium cask. Back up an existing Chromium profile before replacing another installation; do not assume that uninstalling an application and deleting its profile are the same operation.

Launch Chromium and review your search engine, download, privacy and site-permission settings. A Google account is not required for browsing. Removal of Google service integration means Google account synchronization and other Chrome-integrated services should not be expected to work as in Google Chrome. Websites remain free to make their own network requests, collect data and require logins; this browser is not an anonymity service or a guarantee that all Google traffic on the web disappears.

Extensions and removed services

The project disables Google-specific functionality, including Google Safe Browsing. That removes a Google-backed protection mechanism as well as its network dependency; consider this tradeoff when choosing the browser and review suspicious downloads and sites. Chromium patches, web standards and application security still depend on keeping the installed build current.

Chrome Web Store's normal installation interface is not supported out of the box. The official FAQ describes CRX installation and points to the separately maintained chromium-web-store extension for installation/update management. Follow current instructions, verify the extension source and permissions, and keep extensions updated. Do not assume adding an extension recreates every disabled Google service or that every extension has automatic updates under the default configuration.

Community binaries and updates

The core ungoogled-chromium project supplies configuration, patches and scripts; platform repositories maintain their own build and packaging procedures. This cask obtains its binaries from ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium-macos. The wider contributor-binary catalog can contain builds by other contributors with different provenance; do not treat every download listed there as the same Mac distribution.

Current Mac repository documentation describes Developer ID-signed and notarized builds and gives signature-verification guidance. Notarization identifies the signed distribution and is not a promise that a browser has no vulnerabilities. The captured release announcements cover a particular developer-membership period; do not extrapolate that into permanent guaranteed signing or maintenance.

Google Chrome's automatic updater is not a promised feature of this distribution. Monitor the Mac packaging project's releases and the update mechanism you choose, such as the cask, and apply compatible updates promptly. Community packaging can lag Chromium releases; compare the installed Chromium baseline when evaluating update freshness. Release pages sometimes provide package hashes and build information without a browser-feature changelog, so no unlisted security fixes are asserted for these builds.

Requirements and platforms

This current Mac cask requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and supplies separate ARM64 and x86-64 DMGs. The Mac repository's build-tool requirements are not the runtime minimum of this prebuilt cask. The current snapshot declares no extra formula dependency and conflicts with chromium. The broader project supports Linux and Windows through separate platform packages; this Mac DMG is not an installer for those operating systems or a mobile app.

The current 154.0.8037.57-1.1 Apple Silicon DMG is 147,341,012 bytes, matching the official release asset and catalog; the Intel DMG is 156,687,926 bytes. These are download sizes, not installed space. No universal RAM or exact installed-space minimum was verified; tabs, profile caches and downloads need additional resources. Ordinary web browsing needs network access, while saved local documents can be opened offline when their resources are available. Grant camera, microphone or other site permissions only for the sites and features you intend to use; those are not universal startup requirements.

Price and licenses

The browser distribution is free and does not require a paid account or subscription. Optional sponsorship supports community builds and signing. The core ungoogled-chromium code uses BSD 3-Clause, while Chromium and bundled third-party components retain their own licenses and notices. Services visited in the browser and optional extensions may impose separate accounts, prices and terms.
