Tor Browser is a Browsers app for Mac.

About

Tor Browser Alpha is the alpha-channel macOS edition of Tor Browser. It is intended for private browsing and access to websites that may be blocked by your network; it is not the regular tor-browser cask. The installed application is named Tor Browser Alpha.app.

The Tor Project describes these browser characteristics:

  • Isolates websites so third-party trackers have a harder time following activity across sites; cookies and browsing history are cleared when browsing ends.
  • Helps prevent a connection observer from seeing which websites you visit, while the observer can see that you are using Tor.
  • Aims to make browser and device information less useful for fingerprinting.
  • Relays traffic through the Tor network with three layers of encryption, and can help reach sites blocked by a local network.

Install this alpha variant on macOS with brew install --cask tor-browser@alpha. The cask installs the application in /Applications. It conflicts with the regular tor-browser cask, so do not install both together. As an alpha release, this is the pre-release channel rather than the regular browser edition.

Homebrew installs the app in your Applications folder.

Install without Homebrew

Download the same file Homebrew uses: dist.torproject.org/torbrowser/16.0a13/tor-browser-macos-16.0a13.dmg

SHA-256 only checks that the download is complete; it is not a security certification. See the SHA-256 and download address

Uninstall command
$ brew uninstall --cask \tor-browser@alpha

A regular uninstall removes the app and keeps its settings and caches.

Deep clean (optional)
$ brew uninstall --zap --cask \tor-browser@alpha

--zap also deletes the settings, caches and other files listed in the Homebrew definition. They can include data shared with other apps and cannot be restored, and it does not guarantee that nothing is left.See which files are removed
