Thaw
Toni Förster and Thaw contributors · Free, open-source macOS menu bar management with hidden sections, saved layouts, profiles and keyboard automation.
About
Thaw is a free, open-source menu bar manager for macOS. It helps people with crowded menu bars hide less-used icons, retrieve them quickly and keep a saved layout. It is particularly useful on MacBooks with a notch or when several background applications add status items.
Main features in the recorded 2.0 stable line
- Organize items into visible, hidden and always-hidden sections, with automatic rehiding and configurable reveal gestures.
- Arrange menu bar items through a drag-and-drop layout editor and preserve their placement across restarts.
- Display hidden items in a separate Thaw Bar and search for menu bar items.
- Customize the menu bar appearance, including tint, borders, shadows and shapes.
- Save, switch, import and export configuration profiles, with display auto-switch and Focus Filter integration.
- Use hotkeys and the
thaw://URL scheme for supported actions and automation; profiles can have pre/post-apply script hooks.
Thaw 2.0 adopts macOS Tahoe's Liquid Glass interface and reworks menu bar item identification, layout persistence and notch-overflow handling. The live project README also describes beta/nightly features. Item groups, advanced triggers, Zen mode, per-Space profiles, macOS 27 support and newer command-line/widget features must not be assumed to exist in the recorded 2.0.1 stable build.
Installation and setup
Install with brew install --cask thaw, or download the official stable release archive and place Thaw.app in Applications. Launch it, grant Accessibility access when requested so it can move menu bar items, and use Settings to arrange sections, choose reveal behavior and configure hotkeys. Screen Recording permissions are relevant to live menu bar previews and related capture-based features; review permission requests and the behavior of the installed build. Optional permission fallback behavior described for newer beta releases should not be assumed for every older stable feature.
Avoid running multiple menu bar managers simultaneously: Thaw includes detection and warnings for potential conflicts. If a saved layout behaves incorrectly, review the official frequent-issues guide before resetting settings; a reset discards preferences.
Requirements and platform support
The current Homebrew cask and Thaw 2.0 require macOS 26 or later. Older 1.x releases had different requirements and should not be treated as equivalent to the current cask. This is a macOS application, not a Windows or Linux utility. Optional Raycast or other launcher integrations are separate tools, not required for basic menu bar management.
The cask declares no additional formula dependency or explicit cask conflict. This does not guarantee compatibility with every status-item application, macOS update, display configuration or competing manager. No universal memory or installed-storage requirement was established. The cask's official Thaw_2.0.1.zip is 11,256,807 bytes; download size is not installed disk space. The release provides one stable ZIP rather than a separate Apple Silicon-named archive.
Accounts, fees and license
Thaw is free to download and use, with optional donations and sponsorship. It requires no Thaw account or subscription. The project states that it does not collect analytics or telemetry. Its source is licensed under GNU GPL version 3; review the license for distribution and modification obligations.
