About

Postman is a proprietary API development and testing platform for developers, QA engineers and teams designing, debugging and collaborating on APIs. This cask installs the native Postman desktop application, not the separate Postman CLI or Desktop Agent for the web app.

Features

  • Send API requests, configure authentication, headers and bodies, and inspect responses.
  • Organize requests into collections and use variables and environments for repeatable workflows.
  • Write pre-request and test scripts and run collections to validate API behavior.
  • Work with supported request types such as HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket and MCP.
  • Collaborate in workspaces and use specifications, documentation, mocks and monitors, subject to account and plan availability.
  • Use desktop-specific functions such as local collection-run exports, performance testing, request capture and a built-in terminal where supported.

Installation and first use

Install brew install --cask postman, or download the official Mac archive for Apple Silicon or Intel and move Postman.app into Applications. Launch Postman and create a request, choose an HTTP method, enter your endpoint and select Send. The official first-request tutorial uses the public Postman Echo service. Configure credentials and environments for your own API, then save reusable requests to a collection. The native app sends requests without installing the separate Desktop Agent required for certain web-app workflows. CLI and Newman automation are separate tools, not prerequisites for ordinary desktop requests.

System requirements and platforms

Official requirements list macOS11 (Big Sur) or newer, Windows10 or newer, and Linux distributions Ubuntu18.04+, Fedora32+ and Debian10+. The Homebrew cask offers macOS ARM64 and x64 archives and declares no additional formula dependency. Use the correct architecture download. The web application runs in supported browsers and differs from the native app; do not interpret it as a released mobile desktop application. No numeric RAM or disk-space minimum was confirmed in the retrieved system-requirements page. The current Apple Silicon12.31.3 zip is202,480,655 bytes according to the official download response; installed storage differs.

Dependencies, conflicts and installation details

API endpoints must be reachable, with appropriate server credentials and TLS trust. Corporate firewalls, proxy configuration or client certificates may require app settings; these are operational dependencies rather than extra Homebrew formulas. Local testing tools or Git integrations may have additional workflow requirements. Homebrew declares no named cask conflict, but a manually installed Postman.app can occupy the same Applications path. The desktop app includes its own updater. Optional Homebrew zap deletes Postman support data, preferences, caches and saved state; export or otherwise preserve required collections, environments and local data before cleanup. Account sync is not a substitute for checking which local data is backed up.

Accounts, costs and license

The desktop application can use the lightweight API Client while signed out for basic requests. Account-based workspaces, collaboration and cloud services require sign-in. Postman offers free and paid plans, and feature availability and usage limits differ by plan. AI, Flows, cloud testing and other resource-consuming services can have quotas or usage charges; installation does not include unlimited usage. The app and hosted services are governed by Postman's product and service terms, not an open-source license for the entire desktop product. Some separately published developer libraries have their own licenses. Refer to current pricing and terms for your intended use.
