About

Flutter is Google's open-source UI toolkit for building mobile, web, and desktop applications from a shared Dart codebase. It suits application developers and teams that want reusable interfaces while retaining platform-specific integrations.

Features

  • Build reactive interfaces with reusable widgets and rich animation.
  • Use hot reload during development and compile release applications.
  • Target Android, iOS, web, macOS, Windows, and Linux with platform-specific plugins.
  • Inspect widget trees, layout, performance, and debugging information with DevTools.
  • Use the bundled Dart SDK, command-line tooling, packages, and automated tests.

Installation and first use

On macOS, install brew install --cask flutter. Homebrew places the SDK under its share/flutter directory and links the flutter and dart commands. Run flutter --version and flutter doctor -v to inspect your installation, then create a project with flutter create my_app. These commands are installation guidance, not checks already performed on your computer. The official archive can alternatively be extracted and its bin directory added to PATH. Avoid mixing multiple Flutter or Dart installations in PATH.

Dependencies, conflicts, and development hosts

The SDK includes Dart; a separate Dart installation is unnecessary. Homebrew's current cask declares no extra formula dependency, explicit macOS minimum, or package conflict. That does not mean every build toolchain runs on every Mac. Install Xcode Command Line Tools for Git. iOS and macOS builds require full Xcode and its configured tools and accepted licenses; plugins can also require CocoaPods or other native dependencies. Android development requires the Android SDK and appropriate Android toolchain, commonly managed through Android Studio. An editor is optional; VS Code and Android Studio offer Flutter integrations.

Flutter development tools are available for macOS, Windows, and Linux; ChromeOS development uses its Linux environment. Native iOS and macOS builds require a Mac. Native Windows builds require Windows and Visual Studio's C++ desktop tools; VS Code alone does not supply them. Native Linux desktop builds require Linux with its compiler, CMake, Ninja, and GTK development tools. Check flutter doctor and the platform-specific setup guide for the chosen target. Intel Mac support is currently available but deprecated; Apple Silicon is the forward-supported Mac architecture.

Deployment platform support

For Flutter 3.47, the official supported-platform table lists Android API 24–37, iOS 15–27, Windows 10/11, macOS 12–27, Debian 10–13, and Ubuntu 20.04–24.04 LTS. Supported architectures depend on the target: Android includes Arm32, Arm64, and x64; iOS uses Arm64; desktop support includes x64 and Arm64. Web support covers the latest two Chrome, Edge, and Firefox releases and Safari 15.6 or later. These are application deployment requirements, not a claim that macOS 12 can run every current development toolchain. Plugins and application features can impose stricter requirements.

Accounts, costs, and license

The Flutter SDK is free and requires no Flutter account or subscription. Store distribution, signing, cloud services, and third-party packages can have separate accounts, fees, and terms; App Store distribution normally requires Apple Developer Program membership. Flutter is distributed under the BSD 3-Clause license, with separate notices for bundled dependencies.
