About
Music Decoy is a macOS utility for stopping the system Music app from launching when a media Play command is sent and no other app is playing audio. It works while the app is running by using the Music app’s bundle identifier, so macOS treats Music as already open. The developer says it does no background work.
- Prevents the system Music app from launching after a keyboard Play command when no other app is playing audio.
- Also addresses Play commands sent by a Bluetooth headset, including when a call ends and the headset returns to music mode.
- Can be configured to launch another app when Play is pressed. The documented example uses a Terminal command to set an app path.
- Has no Dock or menu bar icon. To quit it, use Activity Monitor or run
killall 'Music Decoy'in Terminal.
Install with brew install --cask music-decoy. The cask installs Music Decoy.app in /Applications. Requires macOS 12 or later. The utility must be running to provide its behavior.
