About

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft's Chromium-based web browser for everyday browsing, work profiles and web development. This cask installs the stable Mac browser, not Edge Legacy, a preview channel or the Windows WebView2 Runtime.

Features

  • Browse modern websites with tabs, separate profiles, favorites and compatible extensions.
  • Manage saved passwords and credentials; sign-in and sync features depend on account and organization settings.
  • Reduce inactive-tab resource usage with sleeping tabs and supported performance controls.
  • Use built-in web capture and PDF reading tools where available on your platform.
  • Use tracking prevention, SmartScreen and other configurable security protections.
  • Inspect web pages with developer tools; administrators can manage browser policies.

Install and use

Install brew install --cask microsoft-edge, or download the official Mac disk image and copy Microsoft Edge into Applications. Open the browser, choose whether to import bookmarks and make it the default browser, and configure privacy/profile settings. This cask supports automatic browser updates and records the EdgeUpdater background agent. Internet access is needed for downloads, updates and online websites; locally saved content can have separate offline capabilities.

Requirements, dependencies and conflicts

Edge151 and newer require macOS13 or later, matching the current Homebrew cask minimum. Both Intel and Apple Silicon Mac platforms are recorded as supported; Microsoft documents native Apple Silicon support. The recorded cask declares no additional formula dependencies or cask conflicts. That does not establish compatibility with every extension or management configuration. A universal minimum RAM or installed-disk requirement was not established in the cited vendor support page. The verified current DMG download is410,325,652bytes, which is not installed disk usage.

Other editions support Windows10/11 and listed enterprise/server variants; x86 CPUs without SSE3 are not supported. Microsoft's current support matrix lists64-bit Linux Ubuntu18.04+, Debian10+, openSUSE15.5+ and Fedora39+; other distributions are not officially supported. Mobile editions require iOS18+ under the vendor's rolling two-version policy, or Android10+ with an ARM processor. Chromebooks are not supported. Features differ across these editions: Windows-only printing or enterprise integrations should not be assumed available on Mac.

Accounts, cost and license

Basic browsing does not require a paid browser subscription or signing into a Microsoft account. Account sign-in enables supported profile/sync services; work accounts may be subject to administrator policies. Edge154 adds Google account sign-in on Windows and macOS in addition to existing options, subject to policy and rollout. Online services, Copilot features, purchases and enterprise subscriptions can have their own account requirements, availability and charges.

Edge is proprietary Microsoft software, distributed under Microsoft's license terms with separately licensed third-party components. Its use of Chromium and the existence of public developer repositories do not make the full browser an open-source project. The browser download is free; review current terms and optional service pricing separately.
