LosslessCut
Mikael Finstad · Trim, split and merge supported video and audio with fast stream-copy workflows, track selection, chapters and metadata tools.
About
LosslessCut is a video and audio editing tool focused on fast lossless trimming and related file operations through FFmpeg. It lets you mark segments, select tracks and export supported streams without routinely re-encoding the entire source.
Features
- Trim and export selected audio or video segments.
- Split files and merge compatible media.
- Select or remove tracks and edit supported metadata.
- Work with chapters, timestamps and segment labels.
- Capture frames and inspect waveform or keyframe information.
- Use supported container and bitstream options such as aspect-ratio metadata.
Compatibility and setup
Current Mac releases require macOS 12 or later: the project's supported-OS guide notes that version 3.66 dropped macOS 11. This download is the Apple Silicon arm64 DMG; Intel users need the separate x64 build. Use a writable output folder with enough space for exported files, open a source and mark the segments and tracks you intend to retain.
Lossless operations are constrained by codecs, container compatibility and keyframe placement. Cuts may not land on an arbitrary exact frame without a different processing method. Review the output, audio synchronization and track selection rather than assuming every edit is identical to a fully re-encoded editor export. Version 3.69.0 documents an issue where changing files during playback can leave playback running in the background; the publisher recommends its latest nightly if that problem occurs.
The project is GPL version 2 licensed, with separate third-party component notices. Store-distributed builds may be paid while project downloads are available through releases. Keep original files until you have verified the exports and avoid overwriting your only copy. File selection and export operate on local media; any optional external links, updates or integrations have their own network and privacy implications.
The project warns that reverting from 3.67+ to an earlier release loses the newer keyboard bindings, so preserve important settings before downgrading.
