About

JetBrains Toolbox App is a desktop manager for JetBrains development tools and projects. It installs, updates and launches supported IDEs, and provides access to recent projects and available versions. Toolbox itself is free; it is not the paid All Products Pack and does not grant a license to every IDE it can download.

Features

  • Install supported JetBrains IDEs and choose available versions.
  • Launch installed tools and recent projects from one place.
  • Read an IDE's changes before applying an update.
  • Manage stable and available early-access versions when the product supports them.
  • Configure update behavior and manage leftover installation directories.
  • Sign in to a JetBrains Account to activate IDE licenses already available to that account.
  • Use supported remote-development connections with the required remote environment.

Install and start

Install with brew install --cask jetbrains-toolbox, or download the official Mac DMG for Intel or Apple Silicon and drag JetBrains Toolbox.app into Applications. Open it, review settings and select the tools you want. Each IDE is a separate download and uses additional disk space. Installing Toolbox alone does not install every JetBrains IDE, a language runtime or a project's dependencies.

Choose an IDE version deliberately, read its release notes and configure automatic updates to suit your projects. IDE updates can change project compatibility, plugins and available features. Keep important source files in version control and retain suitable backups before cleanup or changing tools. Removing an IDE installation, removing Toolbox and deleting project source files are different actions; inspect the target before removing directories.

Toolbox installs and updates tools in locations that must be writable by your account. On Mac, an application-folder permission or operating-system restriction can block an update. Release 3.8 improves this by retaining manual updates when macOS incorrectly reports an installation as non-writable and showing guidance if the update is actually blocked. Review the specific prompt rather than granting unrestricted permissions unnecessarily.

Accounts and IDE licensing

No license is required to use Toolbox App. Signing in to a JetBrains Account allows it to activate licenses you already have for installed IDEs. Individual IDEs can be paid, trial-based or available under specific free-use terms; eligibility varies by product, edition and use case. A free Toolbox download does not convert a commercial IDE into a free product or remove an organization's licensing obligations.

The All Products Pack, individual IDE subscriptions, organizational licenses and optional services have separate prices and terms. An EAP build also has its own validity and usage conditions. Check the IDE's current license and account entitlement before relying on it for commercial work. Toolbox's license and bundled third-party notices are distinct from the source licenses of any open-source IDE components.

Remote development and connectivity

Remote development requires an accessible remote machine and the appropriate tools, authentication and network configuration. It is not free hosted compute included with Toolbox. SSH support and JetBrains Daemon settings depend on version and configuration; do not interpret an EAP announcement as a default feature in every stable release. Keep remote credentials and network access under your organization's policy.

Network access is needed to download tools, check updates, authenticate and use remote services. Existing local IDEs and projects may continue to work offline subject to their own licensing and dependencies. Toolbox does not automatically provide an offline license or back up every project to the cloud.

Mac systems and storage

JetBrains provides separate native Intel and Apple Silicon disk images. Its current installation documentation lists macOS 15 and 26, and states that Toolbox 3.5 and later require macOS 14 or newer. Older macOS 10.14 through 13 can update only as far as Toolbox 3.4.3. The cask's broad platform enumeration is not a promise that the current 3.8.1 runs on those older systems. Windows and Linux use separate packages.

The current 3.8.1 build 3.8.1.88030 Apple Silicon DMG is 142,725,594 bytes; the Intel DMG is 183,261,436 bytes, from the official release API. The ARM download size is also confirmed by HTTP metadata. These exclude installed IDEs, caches, older retained versions and projects. No universal Toolbox-only RAM or installed-space minimum was verified; each IDE and project has its own requirements.

The recorded cask form 3.8.1,3.8.1.88030 combines the product version and exact build number and represents the same upstream release as the bare 3.8.1 catalog record. It is not another distinct release. No additional formula dependency or explicit cask conflict is declared in the captured snapshot.

Cost and software terms

Toolbox App is provided without a purchase or subscription for the manager itself and is governed by JetBrains' applicable software terms and third-party notices. It is not presented as an open-source application. Optional paid IDEs, services and support remain separate purchases. Use the official download source and keep Toolbox and the tools it manages updated.
