About

DuckDuckGo for Mac is a standalone desktop web browser with privacy protections built in. It suits people who want ordinary tabbed browsing, bookmarks and password management together with DuckDuckGo Private Search and controls for reducing web tracking. This Cask installs DuckDuckGo.app; it is not merely a search-engine setting or the DuckDuckGo extension for another browser.

Everyday browsing and privacy tools

The Mac browser uses Apple's WebKit web technology. It provides tracker blocking, HTTPS upgrading where supported, cookie and fingerprinting protections, and Global Privacy Control signals. Protections use maintained lists and can make exceptions to preserve essential site functionality. They do not block every third-party request, guarantee that every tracker is stopped or make a signed-in website unable to identify its own account holder.

The Fire Button clears selected browsing data; Fire Windows and Fire Tabs provide additional controls for browsing without retaining the same local history. Clearing data can sign you out of websites, and Fireproofing can preserve selected site logins. Duck Player offers a more private YouTube-viewing experience, subject to website changes and availability. Email Protection is an optional forwarding-address service with its own setup, not a full email inbox. Duck.ai is optional, has usage limits and separate service terms; the browser remains usable without choosing AI features.

Built-in privacy features should not be confused with universal Chrome Web Store extension compatibility. The Mac edition uses WebKit rather than Chromium; internal Web Extension changes in source release notes do not establish support for every Chrome extension. Check the actual supported integration before migrating a workflow that depends on a specific add-on. Site and protected-media compatibility can vary; this description does not promise playback on every DRM streaming service.

Sync, backup and accounts

Ordinary browsing does not require a DuckDuckGo account or paid subscription. Free Sync & Backup can synchronize supported data such as bookmarks, passwords and Duck.ai chats between compatible devices using end-to-end encryption. It uses device pairing and a Recovery Code rather than requiring the same traditional email/password account used by many browser sync services. Store the Recovery Code securely: it is the recovery route if all connected devices are lost, and DuckDuckGo cannot recover encrypted data without it. Sync is optional and only covers the data types supported by the feature; it is not a complete backup of every file on your Mac.

Websites you visit still have their own accounts, cookies, payments and privacy terms. Downloaded files, browser imports and stored passwords can contain sensitive information, so use the relevant local file and Keychain authorization only when needed. Camera, microphone and location access depend on website requests and macOS/browser permission choices; review each requested permission rather than granting it to every site.

Installation, platform and download

Install the duckduckgo Homebrew Cask or download the official Mac DMG, then place DuckDuckGo.app in Applications. The recorded 1.210.0 build 821 DMG is 186,380,621 bytes according to official HTTP HEAD; this is installer archive size, not installed disk use. The package is offered for both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and the Cask declares no extra runtime or Rosetta dependency and no explicit Cask conflict.

The official current Mac installation guide requires macOS 12.3 or later for both direct and Mac App Store downloads. The Cask dependency is expressed more broadly as macOS 12 or later; follow the product's 12.3 requirement when checking compatibility. Avoid keeping overlapping direct-download and App Store copies unless you deliberately manage which application and profile you use. Windows, iPhone/iPad and Android editions are separate downloads, not this Mac package.

The official guide notes that the Mac App Store edition lacks the Bitwarden integration and access to local files available in the direct-download edition. Users who need these capabilities should choose the appropriate distribution. Imports and making DuckDuckGo the default browser are choices made after installation; installing the Cask does not itself migrate all other browser data or authorize every website permission.

Free browser and optional paid services

The browser, search engine and core browsing privacy protections are free. Public Apple-browser source is distributed under Apache-2.0; included operating-system components and third-party services retain their own terms. DuckDuckGo's Plus and Pro subscriptions are optional paid services, distinct from installing the free browser. They can include a device-wide VPN, advanced Duck.ai access, Personal Information Removal and Identity Theft Restoration, with plan limits and regional eligibility. Personal Information Removal is available in the United States; other feature coverage can vary by region. Check current plans and checkout pricing rather than assuming the browser download includes a subscription.

The free browser's tracker protections are not a device-wide VPN and do not hide your IP address from every destination or network provider. The subscription VPN needs activation and its separate installation/network authorization. Subscription activation on additional devices uses an email address and one-time authentication; removing a subscription from a device does not cancel billing. Privacy protection reduces certain exposure but does not guarantee anonymity or security against every threat.
