About

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. Describe a task in natural language to explore a codebase, understand complex code, implement features, debug problems, edit files, and run commands and tests.

It works in the terminal and integrates with IDEs such as VS Code. CLAUDE.md stores project instructions; MCP, plugins, custom commands, and subagents extend its capabilities. Permissions and organizational policies govern edits and commands. Review changes and run tests before shipping.

On Mac, install with brew install --cask claude-code, then run claude in your project and sign in. This cask tracks the stable channel; claude-code@latest is a separate, conflicting cask. Update with brew upgrade claude-code. Use claude --version and claude doctor to check the installation.

Official requirements include macOS 13+, 4 GB RAM, an x64 or ARM64 processor, and internet access. The Homebrew installation uses a native binary and does not require a separate Node.js installation. Access requires an eligible paid Claude subscription, Claude Console account, or supported third-party API provider; model availability and limits depend on your account.

This listing is the CLI, not the Claude desktop chat app. Official VS Code screenshots illustrate its IDE integration, which requires the extension to be installed separately.
