OpenSC provides libraries and command-line utilities for cryptographic smart cards. It helps applications use supported cards for authentication, encrypted mail and digital signatures through standard interfaces, including PKCS#11 and macOS CryptoTokenKit. It is middleware and developer/security tooling, not a standalone graphical smart-card manager.
macOS components
The official macOS installer offers a PKCS#11 module and smart-card tools, automatic startup registration, and a CryptoTokenKit-based driver for native macOS applications. Custom installation can disable individual components. Card and application compatibility depends on the supported driver and the integration used.
Installation and testing
Download the official release DMG, open it and run the OpenSC PKG installer. The documented installation directory is /Library/OpenSC, with command-line tool links in /usr/local/bin. PKCS#11 libraries include opensc-pkcs11.so and onepin-opensc-pkcs11.so. The macOS quick-start guide describes checking CryptoTokenKit registration with pluginkit, listing identities with sc_auth identities and testing the PKCS#11 installation with /Library/OpenSC/bin/pkcs11-tool --login --test. Configuration is stored in /Library/OpenSC/etc/opensc.conf. Follow the official guide and your card provider's instructions before changing security settings.
Distribution and release scope
The Homebrew opensc-app cask distributes the official OpenSC 0.27.1 DMG. Only one version is recorded in this backend; this is not a claim that upstream has only one release. Version 0.27.1 fixes release-infrastructure problems and includes the documented 0.27.0 security, card-driver and PKCS#11 changes. The official release was updated on April 18, 2026 to replace an incorrectly signed macOS binary. The macOS distribution is separate from the Windows installers and should not be illustrated with their application icons.
