OpenMTP

OpenMTP is a free, open-source Mac file-transfer application for Android and other compatible MTP devices. It suits people who want to copy files over USB without using a wireless transfer service.

Installation and use

Install with brew install --cask openmtp, or download the official build for your Mac architecture and move OpenMTP to Applications. Connect your Android/MTP device with a data-capable USB cable, unlock it and select its File Transfer/MTP USB mode when prompted. Open the app and refresh device discovery. Device permissions, cables, USB modes and competing device-access software can affect connectivity; consult the official troubleshooting guide if a device is not detected. This workflow uses MTP, not an ADB installation requirement.

Requirements and platforms

The official project specifies macOS10.14 Mojave or newer for the current application and provides separate Apple Silicon/ARM64 and Intel/x64 downloads. It limits current Kalam-kernel updates to recent macOS versions; its support text also discusses Big Sur11+ and older-system limitations, so a launch minimum does not guarantee equal device updates on every old OS. macOS10.13 and earlier require the older3.1.15 release with Legacy MTP mode and auto-updates disabled. Version3.3.0 specifically fixes an Apple Silicon startup crash on macOS27.

The application runs on macOS; Android and other MTP devices are transfer endpoints, not platforms on which the Mac application is installed. No official Windows, Linux, iOS or Android desktop edition was established. The cask has no additional formula dependencies or explicit cask conflicts. A supported MTP device and data-capable USB connection are required for transfers. Minimum RAM/installed-disk figures were not established. The official3.3.0 Apple Silicon ZIP is121,017,371bytes; the DMG is126,208,067bytes, and installed size differs.

Account, price and license

OpenMTP is free and MIT-licensed, maintained by Ganesh Rathinavel and contributors. Local USB transfers do not require an OpenMTP cloud account or subscription. The maintainer states that it does not collect personally identifiable information. Third-party libraries retain their own licenses. Download only from the official project, website or Homebrew cask to avoid similarly named copycat sites.
