OpenInTerminal

OpenInTerminal connects Finder to terminal emulators, text editors and other applications. It opens the selected file or folder; if nothing is selected, it uses the top Finder window, and if no Finder window is open, it opens the desktop. This listing is the full OpenInTerminal app, not the separate lightweight OpenInTerminal-Lite or OpenInEditor-Lite packages.

Finder workflow

Use Finder integration to open items in a preferred terminal or editor. The full application provides GUI preferences, keyboard shortcuts and configurable context menus. Custom applications can be added when they support opening the selected path. The README lists Terminal, iTerm, Hyper, Alacritty, kitty, Warp, WezTerm, Tabby, Ghostty and cmux among supported terminals, alongside editors such as TextEdit, Xcode, Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, BBEdit, TextMate, JetBrains IDEs, Nova and Cursor. Support varies by app and installed version.

Setup and permissions

Install with brew install --cask openinterminal or use the official release archive. Enable the Finder extension and add its icon through Finder toolbar customization. The official configuration guide provides separate instructions for macOS 15 and later, where extension management differs from earlier versions. The project warns that signed builds are no longer provided; assess whether you trust the unsigned binary and follow the official guide for opening or signing it.

Recorded release

Homebrew records version 2.3.9. Its official release fixes an AppleScript/command injection vulnerability involving crafted folder names, adds Zed, Emacs, Kakoune, GitKraken and cmux support, and adds Finder-only shortcut and context-submenu options. Older recorded version 2.3.7 lacks that documented security fix.
