OnyX

OnyX is Titanium Software's free Mac maintenance and configuration utility. It presents graphical controls for tasks that would otherwise involve command-line operations, including verification of system-file structures, cache cleanup, rebuilding databases or indexes, application removal and selected Finder, Dock, Safari or Apple-application preferences.

Use the operating-system-specific edition

Each major macOS version has its own OnyX edition. The current catalog package is OnyX 5.1.0 for macOS 27 Golden Gate, which the publisher explicitly limits to Apple Silicon Macs running that system. It is not a general installer for every older Mac. The publisher's 5.0.x line targets macOS 26 Tahoe, with separate packages for Sequoia, Sonoma and earlier systems. Select the matching edition instead of trying a newer or older operating-system package on the wrong system.

The current official Golden Gate DMG is 7943049 bytes according to the publisher's server. The publisher says older editions are no longer being developed, although downloads remain available. Do not treat an older download as a promise of continuing updates or compatibility with a later macOS release.

Maintenance and permissions

Start with the specific task you intend to perform rather than enabling every cleanup option. Clearing caches can temporarily slow applications while data is rebuilt; rebuilding indexes takes time and can affect search availability during the process. Removing files or uninstalling an application can be irreversible without a backup. Keep recoverable backups of important data, close affected applications and read the utility's descriptions before proceeding.

System maintenance tasks may request administrator authorization or permissions to access protected data. Grant only the access needed for a chosen task and follow the publisher's instructions. A graphical interface does not remove the consequences of changing system settings or deleting files. The app is not a substitute for repairing failing hardware, resolving every application bug or reinstalling a damaged operating system when necessary.

Cost and privacy

OnyX is distributed free of charge, with optional donations supporting development. Free use does not establish an open-source license; the publisher distributes the application and its terms. It is a local maintenance utility rather than a hosted cleanup service. Downloads, publisher links or donation processing can involve network services, while the files you choose to inspect or remove remain the focus of local maintenance. Review actual permissions and any system dialogs instead of assuming the utility needs access to unrelated data.

The official current release notes state that 5.1.0 is the new version developed only for Golden Gate. They also list 5.1.1 as in progress; those future changes are not attributed to 5.1.0. Exact changes for the two older catalog entries 5.0.5 and 5.0.4 were not verified, and no generic improvement text is substituted.
