Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office for Mac installs Microsoft's desktop productivity applications for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email and notes. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote serve different tasks within the suite; OneDrive provides an optional cloud-file workflow. This is the Mac desktop suite, rather than the browser-only Microsoft365 web applications.

Desktop applications and workflows

Use Word for formatted documents, Excel for spreadsheets and data analysis, PowerPoint for presentations, Outlook for email and calendars, and OneNote for notebooks. Features and supported file types differ between applications. Outlook needs a configured mail account to send and receive messages. OneDrive cloud synchronization needs a Microsoft account and network access; cloud collaboration also depends on the relevant service and permissions.

The suite installer does not install a database server or grant access to other people's documents, mailboxes or cloud storage. Review document sharing, mail account permissions and the destination of synchronized files. Office macros and add-ins can execute automation or access services; enable only trusted content. Saving or synchronizing an edited document changes the corresponding file and does not replace an independent backup.

Installation and compatibility

The current16.113 installer is2,877,627,418 bytes before installed storage and requires macOS14 Sonoma or later. Microsoft supports Office natively on Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs. Microsoft follows a rolling support policy for recent macOS versions, so check current requirements before upgrading the suite or the operating system.

The downloaded PKG installs desktop applications and may require administrator approval. The catalog's installer configuration disables the Microsoft AutoUpdate installer choice. Manage updates through your chosen supported distribution and administration workflow; do not assume a separate updater is installed by this choice. Microsoft publishes packages with and without Teams; Teams is a separate collaboration application and should not be assumed to be included in this package.

This suite cask conflicts with the standalone Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote casks, the Office BusinessPro cask, and the OneDrive cask. Choose a consistent installation route instead of managing the same application through overlapping casks. The cask also manages Microsoft Defender-related application paths; Defender functionality and entitlement depend on the applicable product and plan, rather than being guaranteed by downloading Office.

Activation, accounts and cost

Downloading and installing Office does not provide a free license to edit with every installed application. Sign in and activate with an eligible Microsoft365 subscription or a compatible perpetual Office license. An Office2024 purchase licenses the applications and devices specified by that edition; it does not automatically license every app present in a suite installer or include future major releases.

Microsoft365 subscriptions include continuing app updates and plan-specific cloud storage and services. The US Personal plan is advertised at$9.99 per month or$99.99 per year. Office Home2024 is advertised as a$179.99 one-time purchase for one PC or Mac. Prices, taxes, app entitlements and promotions vary by region and can change. Home2024 does not include the same Outlook entitlement as editions or subscriptions that explicitly include Outlook.

Copilot features require an eligible plan, account and supported experience, and can have usage limits and regional availability restrictions. Some consumer Microsoft365 plans include Copilot benefits; business licensing may require a separate entitlement. Installing this PKG alone does not unlock Copilot.

The Mac App Store versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint require a qualifying Microsoft365 subscription for activation; existing perpetual Office licenses do not activate those App Store editions. Use Microsoft's direct-download distribution for a supported perpetual license. Microsoft Office is proprietary commercial software, not an open-source suite.
