Halloy is an open-source IRC client for macOS, Windows and Linux, designed to be simple and fast. The Homebrew cask installs the macOS application; it is an IRC client rather than a hosted messaging service. Connect to IRC networks and participate in channels or private conversations using the client interface.
Conversation workspace
Halloy provides a sidebar for servers and conversations, configurable panes, channel nicklists, unread and highlight indicators, and internal buffers. Recent releases add a Channel Monitor for messages from joined channels and an in-app configuration editor. Server and internal buffer actions, nickname interactions and keyboard shortcuts can be configured for your preferred workflow.
IRCv3 and network features
The official project lists support for SASL, message tags, server-time, echo-message, chathistory, read markers, replies, reactions, typing, account notifications and other IRCv3 capabilities. Availability depends on the server. Bouncer network configuration, connection retry limits and protocol logging are documented release features. Halloy also supports file transfers, link previews and configurable appearance.
Configuration and recent features
Configuration includes server definitions, authentication, buffer behavior, fonts and themes. The 2026.8 release introduced system-keyring support for several password types, undo/redo in editors and explicit portable mode. The 2026.9 release adds animated GIF support, keyboard-driven message focus and smooth scrolling. Consult the version notes and documentation for exact settings and migration changes instead of assuming old configuration keys remain unchanged.
Project and macOS distribution
Halloy is developed in the squidowl/halloy repository and distributed under GPL-3.0. Its community support channel is #halloy on libera.chat. The recorded macOS 2026.9 artifact is halloy.dmg; its HTTP Content-Length was measured as 41,044,413 bytes. The release publishes a single macOS DMG rather than separate architecture-named DMGs.
