介紹

PyCharm is JetBrains' integrated development environment for Python. It brings code editing, navigation, inspections, refactoring, debugging, tests, environments and version-control workflows into one desktop application. It suits Python developers, students and data-science practitioners; available advanced web, database and remote-development tools depend on the selected Pro entitlement.

Unified PyCharm and features

The current PyCharm distribution combines the former Community and Professional products. Its core Python-development features remain free and open-source, including Jupyter Notebook support. A Pro subscription unlocks additional functionality. Installing unified PyCharm automatically starts a 30-day Pro trial; after it ends, you can subscribe or continue using the free core. This Cask's historical professional download filename does not mean that the free core is unavailable, and the unified product should not be described as the discontinued standalone Community Edition.

Use completion and inspections to find potential errors, navigate symbols and refactor code. Configure a Python interpreter and environment, install the packages needed by a project, run tests and inspect values in the debugger. Notebook support integrates data-science workflows. Git tools provide diffs, commits and remote operations when Git and the necessary repository credentials are configured. Web frameworks, database tools and advanced remote interpreters may require Pro and their own external services; they are not bundled hosting or database subscriptions.

Mac installation and runtimes

Install the pycharm Homebrew Cask, download the matching official DMG and move PyCharm into Applications, or manage the IDE through JetBrains Toolbox. Apple Silicon and Intel use separate native disk images. The recorded Apple Silicon 2026.2.3 DMG is 1,221,864,868 bytes by official HEAD; this is download size, not installed disk usage.

The current 2026.2 installation guide lists macOS 15 and 26, x86_64 or ARM64 with four CPU cores, 8 GB total RAM with 3 GB available for IDE processes, 10 GB disk space and a 1280×720 display. The recorded Cask provides no numeric macOS minimum, so its metadata alone does not establish compatibility with older macOS releases. Windows and Linux distributions are separate.

JetBrains Runtime based on JBR 21 is bundled, so a separate Java installation is not needed to launch the IDE. This Java runtime does not replace the Python interpreter that executes a project's code. Configure a suitable local Python installation, virtual environment or supported remote interpreter; projects also need their own libraries and tools. The current guide lists Python 2.7 and Python 3.9–3.15 support. Docker, SSH, cloud SDKs and GPU libraries are only needed for workflows that use them, not for every local Python project.

Access, plugins and project trust

Running or debugging code, installing Python packages, executing terminal commands and using plugins can run programs with your local user's permissions. Only trust projects and extensions whose origin you have reviewed. Repository operations, remote interpreters and databases may use credentials and can change remote resources. File access to protected macOS folders may require authorization; general Python editing is not documented as requiring Screen Recording or Accessibility access. The Cask lists no explicit conflicts, but installed Python environments, plugins and previous PyCharm settings still require deliberate configuration.

Accounts, licensing and online services

The free core can continue after the Pro trial without a paid subscription. Activating paid Pro uses an eligible JetBrains license, account or an organization's supported licensing mechanism. Prices, educational eligibility and commercial terms vary; the IDE download does not grant every paid plugin or external service. The unified distribution includes free open-source core components and separately licensed proprietary functionality, so the complete package must not be represented as wholly Apache-licensed or unrestricted open-source software.

JetBrains AI and hosted collaboration or remote services have separate eligibility, quotas and privacy terms. Enabling an online AI or cloud integration may send code or project context to a service; do not assume such features run only on the Mac. Local editing and locally executed Python projects are distinct from those optional services.
