.NET Runtime provides the execution environment for applications targeting .NET. This Homebrew cask installs Microsoft’s standard .NET runtime on macOS, not a standalone graphical application or the complete development SDK.

Choosing the right installation

The official installation guide distinguishes the standard .NET Runtime, which runs console applications, from ASP.NET Core Runtime for web applications and the SDK for development. Installing the SDK also supplies runtimes, but this runtime-only package does not provide the SDK build tools. Choose a runtime version compatible with the application you need to run; installing one major version does not automatically supply other major versions.

macOS installation

Homebrew records version 10.0.12 and provides separate Apple-silicon arm64 and Intel x64 PKG installers. This exact cask installs the Microsoft package and exposes the dotnet executable through a Homebrew symlink. It conflicts with the separately packaged SDK and preview casks. Consult Microsoft’s supported operating-system table for the chosen .NET version rather than treating Homebrew’s minimum OS metadata as a support guarantee.

Checking the installation

Use dotnet --list-runtimes to inspect installed runtime versions. If an application reports a missing framework, confirm that its required runtime version and processor architecture are installed. The upstream dotnet/runtime repository contains the runtime source and engineering documentation; source-build prerequisites are separate from requirements for using the installer.
