ZeroTier One

ZeroTier One connects devices, virtual machines, containers and applications as though they shared a physical data center or cloud region. It combines a cryptographically addressed peer-to-peer transport (VL1) with an Ethernet virtualization layer (VL2), allowing applications to use a virtual network across different physical locations.

Network architecture

The official repository describes end-to-end encryption using keys controlled by the users. Most traffic travels peer-to-peer; relaying is available when a direct peer-to-peer connection cannot be established, but the project's free relaying is slower. The virtual Ethernet layer supports software-defined networking features including fine-grained access-control rules for network micro-segmentation and security monitoring.

macOS package

This Homebrew entry installs the ZeroTier One macOS PKG at version 1.16.2. It is the endpoint networking software, not the hosted Central administration website. Consult the official documentation for installation, network membership and platform requirements. The project separately provides mobile clients and service API documentation.

Version and licensing

Version 1.16.1 disables metrics collection by default and fixes Mac/BSD tun/tap issues. Version 1.16.2 raises the network-specialist limit from 256 to 512; its upstream release also includes Windows-specific fixes and controller changes that should not be interpreted as Mac client changes.

Since 1.16.0, the core and service use the Mozilla Public License, while the network controller uses a commercial source-available license. Default binary builds no longer include the controller. Building with nonfree components changes the resulting executable's licensing; consult the repository license files rather than assuming all components have the same terms. Network-specific relays in 1.16.0 are documented as preview/beta functionality.
