Requirements and setup

The official desktop-app support page lists macOS 12 or later. Download the Mac disk image, install the app and sign in to your Proton account. The listed download size is the complete official 1.15.1 DMG, measured from its downloaded bytes. Account connectivity and service access require a network connection.

Anyone with a paid or trial Proton Mail plan can use the desktop app. The official guide offers free-plan users a 14-day desktop trial; verify current plan access before depending on continued desktop use. The desktop application does not replace account credentials or two-factor authentication. Enable notifications only if you want mail details surfaced on your Mac, and consider what could appear on a shared screen.

The desktop source package declares GPL-3.0 licensing; Proton's hosted account services and paid subscriptions have separate terms. Proton Mail's encryption behavior depends on the messaging workflow and recipients. Do not assume that all email to external addresses is automatically end-to-end encrypted; choose the supported protected-message options appropriate to sensitive correspondence. Keep account recovery information secure and review account and service privacy settings.
