CaskHub
Ali Elsokary · Native Mac interface for Homebrew casks, with app discovery, installed-app detection, real brew actions, update management and visual browsing.
Descrição
CaskHub is a native SwiftUI interface for discovering and managing Mac applications distributed as Homebrew casks. It suits Mac users who want visual app browsing and update management while retaining compatibility with their existing Homebrew command-line workflow. It is an independent project, not an official Homebrew app store.
Main features
- Browse casks by categories, curated shelves and popularity charts.
- Search names, tokens and descriptions and inspect application metadata.
- View recently added casks and installation rankings for multiple time windows.
- Detect installed casks from your real Homebrew Caskroom receipts.
- Install, update and uninstall casks through your actual brew binary.
- Adopt eligible applications installed outside Homebrew into brew management.
- Use Standard or Classic appearance, grid/list layouts and light/dark themes.
- Queue downloads, run up to three simultaneously and cancel queued/downloading actions.
Install and start
Install CaskHub with brew install --cask caskhub, or download the official ZIP, extract it and move CaskHub into Applications. Launch it and browse or search the catalog. Browsing works without Homebrew; when you want to install, update or uninstall applications, a working Homebrew installation is required. CaskHub provides guided setup if Homebrew is missing and supports custom installation paths as well as native Apple Silicon and Intel prefixes.
Check the installed library and Updates view before selecting an action. Real application changes are performed by brew and remain visible to command-line Homebrew tools. A package-based installer that needs administrator rights uses a native macOS password dialog; catalog browsing does not itself mean every operation needs elevated privileges. Read each cask's requirements and prompts, and avoid assuming all apps can be installed without additional permissions or dependencies.
Adopting an existing app places it under Homebrew management; it is distinct from simply listing an application installed elsewhere. Review Adopt or Replace choices before changing an existing installation. CaskHub 0.9.0 adds a separate Installed section for externally managed apps, controlled in General settings. Cancelling a queued or downloading action does not promise that every already-started installer can be rolled back.
Homebrew, updates and network use
Catalog metadata and charts come from Homebrew's public APIs. Categories, first-seen data and icons use the companion CaskFlow pipeline, with a bundled snapshot to support initial browsing without waiting for those resources. Fresh catalog information, downloads and software updates still need network access. Installed-app detection reads local Caskroom receipts; it is not a cloud account synchronization service.
Update detection distinguishes self-updating applications and version-packaging differences. With Greedy disabled, 0.9.0 aligns update listings with Homebrew's outdated results. Review whether you want CaskHub/Homebrew or an application's own updater to manage a given app. CaskHub itself uses Sparkle for its own updates. An app being listed in the catalog does not make its third-party license or subscription free.
Requirements and platforms
Official CaskHub documentation requires macOS 15.6 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel. The cask's major-version dependency is macOS 15, but the more specific upstream 15.6 requirement is the appropriate guide. No official Windows, Linux, iOS or Android CaskHub application is established. Homebrew is required for write actions, although this snapshot does not declare an additional formula dependency or cask conflict.
The official 0.9.1 ZIP is 7,871,041 bytes, matching the catalog and release asset. This is download size, not installed disk usage. No universal RAM or exact installed-space minimum was confirmed; Homebrew, its caches and installed target applications require additional storage and have their own system requirements. Source builds require Xcode 26 or later, which is not a requirement to run the prebuilt application.
Privacy, accounts and cost
CaskHub is free under the MIT license, with no premium tier, advertisements or subscription. No CaskHub account is required for browsing and ordinary local management. Selected third-party apps and services may require their own accounts, licenses or payments.
The official README describes anonymous usage metrics and technical crash diagnostics through Sentry, plus limited anonymous session and new-install signals through TelemetryDeck. You can opt out in Settings > Privacy. Review that setting if you prefer not to send those reports; free and open source does not mean the app has no optional reporting components.
