Proton Pass
Proton AG · Proton’s password and secure-information manager with encrypted vault synchronization, account-based access and supported offline desktop workflows.
Descripción
Proton Pass is a password and secure-information manager for people who want to organize credentials and other sensitive items across supported devices. Its desktop client works with a Proton account and the service’s encrypted vaults. The Mac app is part of a broader product that also has browser extensions and mobile clients; these distributions provide different integration workflows.
Vaults and credentials
Store and organize supported logins, notes and other item types, search vault content and import supported data from another manager. The publisher describes aliases, sharing and additional security features, some of which depend on the selected plan or gradual feature rollout. A desktop app installation does not automatically install a browser extension or grant every browser-filling integration.
The latest desktop notes introduce Bitwarden folder import and improve session and offline reliability. Previously synchronized data and enabled offline mode can be available without an active connection under the applicable account and feature conditions; a fresh sign-in, new shared vault or undownloaded item still needs service access. Verify offline setup before traveling rather than assuming an unsynchronized vault is available.
Installation and Mac requirements
The official ProtonPass_1.42.0.dmg is 237,715,941 bytes. Read-only inspection confirms version 1.42.0, a macOS 12.0 bundle minimum and both arm64 and x86_64 executable slices. Choose a compatible Mac and the official desktop distribution. Download the Mac release and follow its installation workflow, or use brew install --cask proton-pass. No additional Homebrew formula dependency is declared, and no separate developer SDK is asserted as a prerequisite for the packaged client.
Accounts, network and permissions
A Proton account is required for the account-based service. Proton offers free and paid Pass plans; paid subscriptions, business services and individual capabilities have separate terms and eligibility. The download itself does not confer a paid plan. Check current plan conditions for sharing limits, aliases and optional advanced features before depending on them.
Network access supports authentication, synchronization, updates and enabled service features. Selected import and export files require file access. Clipboard use and optional biometric unlocking or notifications involve the corresponding macOS facilities. Do not grant unrelated global privacy permissions simply to view a vault. When using a browser extension, review its installation and site access separately.
License and protection
The official ProtonMail/WebClients source repository includes GPL version 3. The hosted Proton service and paid plans also have their own service and subscription terms. An open-source client license does not mean that every service feature is free or that losing account recovery material can be remedied by the app source.
Use a strong account password and appropriate recovery and two-factor methods. Proton advertises end-to-end encrypted vault content, but that does not make an unlocked computer, compromised browser, exposed export or accidentally shared item safe. Review the recipient and scope before sharing credentials. Authentication, account and operational service data are distinct from encrypted vault contents; no claim that every byte of service metadata is encrypted is made here.
Data and recovery risks
Imported credentials, clipboard contents and plaintext CSV exports can expose secrets. Store backups securely, clear unnecessary export files and avoid uploading vault dumps or recovery keys in support requests. Confirm imports and retain a safe copy until you know the new vault is complete. Synchronization is not a substitute for an independent recovery strategy.
Vault removal, lost recovery information, policy changes or an incorrect account selection can affect access. An offline cache can also be outdated. Verify high-value credentials against the service and keep emergency recovery material in an appropriate separate location. Review screenshots before sharing because usernames, item names and one-time codes can identify accounts even when passwords are masked.
