Inkscape

Inkscape is a free, open-source desktop vector graphics editor for illustrators, designers, educators and anyone creating scalable artwork. Its native SVG documents remain editable as paths, shapes and text rather than a fixed grid of pixels.

Install and use

Install the Mac app with brew install --cask inkscape, or choose the official DMG for Apple Silicon or Intel, open it and copy Inkscape to Applications. Launch the GUI, create an SVG document, and save an editable copy before exporting a delivery format. Native modern Mac packages do not require the old XQuartz installation instructions for legacy Inkscape releases.

Platforms, dependencies and limitations

Official desktop distributions exist for macOS, Windows and GNU/Linux. The current cask provides Intel and ARM Mac variants but lists no explicit minimum macOS version, extra formula dependency or conflict; this absence does not guarantee compatibility with every older system or extension. Use the requirements on the exact architecture download. The official1.4.4 Apple Silicon application Info.plist declares macOS11.3 as its minimum; this was checked without launching the app. The Intel package minimum, minimum RAM and installed footprint were not independently established. The current official Apple Silicon1.4.4 DMG is156,920,591bytes; download size differs from installed space and artwork size.

Optional extensions, import/export helpers and fonts may have additional requirements. Official1.4.3/1.4.4 Wiki notes warn that extensions and Python-based format helpers do not work when official Mac DMG applications are started from the command line, following a Mac security change. Use the GUI and consult the project's issue notes for that workflow. Platform-specific fixes and Windows ARM packages are not Mac features. Do not assume proprietary-format imports are pixel-perfect. No official iOS or Android desktop-editor edition was established.

Accounts, fees and license

Inkscape can be used locally without an Inkscape subscription or mandatory cloud account. It is free software under the GNU GPL; contributions and donations are optional. Licensing the application does not automatically change ownership or licensing of your exported artwork, imported assets, fonts or other third-party material. The Inkscape project and contributors maintain it, with source hosted on its official GitLab project.
