Descripción

FineTune is a free, open-source macOS menu-bar audio controller from the ronitsingh10/FineTune project. It combines per-application volume, device routing and equalization in a popup interface. It suits users who want to balance several audio apps, send different apps to different outputs or configure headphone correction without repeatedly opening each application's preferences.

App and device audio control

Adjust individual app sliders and mute, pin apps for advance configuration and use gain presets where appropriate. Route an app to a single output or multiple selected devices. Device controls include output selection, input monitoring and volume controls for compatible hardware. Priority ordering can automatically select a preferred device when it connects.

FineTune includes a 10-band EQ, per-device AutoEQ headphone correction, EqualizerAPO profile import and loudness features. Profiles and presets change audio processing; they are not a guarantee of accurate calibration for every headphone, listening level or recording task. Volume boost and EQ can increase output substantially, so start at a suitable level and avoid clipping or unexpected loud playback.

Compatible external-monitor speakers can be controlled through DDC. Support depends on the monitor, connection and hardware response, and software gain is not the same as changing a monitor's physical volume. Bluetooth music/call modes and aggregate devices also have their own audio constraints.

Install and first use

Install with brew install --cask finetune, or download FineTune.dmg from the official GitHub releases and drag FineTune.app into Applications. Launch the app and grant the required audio-capture permission when prompted. Click the menu-bar icon; applications currently playing audio appear automatically. Adjust their level or select an output, then open the app's EQ controls if needed.

FineTune uses Core Audio process taps and aggregate-device routing internally. It is not a separately installed BlackHole-style loopback driver, and this Cask does not declare a driver-package dependency. A BlackHole device shown in a screenshot is an example of an already available output device, not proof that FineTune installs BlackHole. Audio applications and hardware remain separate from this controller.

Feature permissions

Screen & System Audio Recording permission is required to capture and route application audio through macOS process taps. Enable FineTune in the corresponding Privacy & Security section and relaunch it after changing permission. Despite the permission category's name, the documented purpose here is application audio routing, not a promise that every desktop screen is recorded.

Microphone permission is separate and is required for input-device monitoring. Optional F10/F11/F12 media-key handling requires Accessibility permission according to the official troubleshooting guide. Enable it only if using that feature; it is not the same authorization as audio capture. The current guide does not treat every unrelated system permission as a prerequisite.

FineTune can change real device levels, defaults and audio paths. If an app is incompatible or produces audio problems, the official guide recommends ignoring it in edit mode, which tears down its process tap and restores normal macOS routing. Changing the default device or app output may interrupt calls or recordings, so review the active route before a session.

Shortcuts and personalization

Global hotkeys can adjust or mute the audible app, falling back to the frontmost app when nothing is audible, or toggle the popup. Adjustable volume-step sizes, keyboard popup navigation and typed numeric levels give precise control. Media-key behavior and the volume HUD are configurable rather than mandatory replacements for all system controls.

The app offers light/dark appearance, popup sizes and device icons. Settings include update preferences, and the application supports automatic updates. Inspect the relevant release notes when troubleshooting version-specific hardware behavior: 1.9.0 fixes the external-monitor DDC crash introduced in 1.8.0.

Platform, package and dependencies

The README and Cask require macOS 15 or later, while the tagged 1.9.0 Xcode project sets its deployment target to macOS 15.4. Use macOS 15.4 or later when planning compatibility with this published build rather than assuming every early 15.x release is covered by the broad README wording. The recorded Mac package metadata covers Intel and Apple Silicon platform variants; the release is a Mac application, not a Windows or Linux mixer.

The official 1.9.0 DMG is 5,436,346 bytes, confirmed by HTTP HEAD and GitHub release-asset metadata. Installed files, optional imported profiles and settings use additional space. The Cask declares no extra formula dependency or conflicting Cask. Building from source requires development tools, but ordinary use of the distributed app does not require installing Xcode or the release pipeline's packaging tools.

Cost, account and license

FineTune is available free of charge under GPL version 3. It does not require a paid app license, subscription or hosted FineTune account for local audio control. Optional donations support its developer. Audio apps, hardware and external profile services can have separate requirements and licenses; the GPL does not override their terms or the attribution requirements of redistributed material.

The icon and screenshot come from the official tagged repository. The screenshot illustrates the Mac popup's device and app controls and a multi-output selector; it is publisher material, not a newly captured 1.9.0 session.
