Descripción

GNU Emacs is an extensible text editor and programming environment, built around Emacs Lisp. This Mac cask obtains Emacs.app from David Caldwell's Emacs For Mac OS X distribution, which describes its packages as pure GNU Emacs builds without extras. It is not the separate Emacs Mac port, Aquamacs or an emacs-plus formula build.

Features

  • Edit text and source code with syntax-aware major modes and extensible key bindings.
  • Work with buffers, windows, search, replacement and keyboard macros.
  • Use built-in help, tutorials and searchable manuals.
  • Organize notes and tasks with Org mode.
  • Run shells, compilation and debugging workflows with appropriate external tools.
  • Extend the editor through Emacs Lisp and installed packages.
  • Use the graphical Mac application or command-line clients provided by this distribution.

Install and first steps

Install with brew install --cask emacs-app, or open the distribution's official Universal DMG and move Emacs.app into Applications. The current cask token is emacs-app; its old token was emacs. Open the application and start the built-in tutorial with C-h t, where C means Control. C-x C-f opens a file and C-x C-s saves it. Menu commands provide alternatives while learning the key bindings.

This cask also links command-line Emacs, emacsclient, ebrowse and etags, plus manual pages. A separate terminal Emacs or formula installation can overlap those command names; choose the intended executable deliberately. The cask conflicts with emacs-app@nightly and emacs-app@pretest, so select a release channel instead of overlapping them. It declares no extra formula dependency.

Keep customization in your own Emacs configuration and back up important files and settings. Emacs Lisp initialization files and installed packages can execute code with your user account's access. Review code before loading it; do not treat a downloaded configuration as harmless text. External compilers, language servers, Git and debugging tools are separate programs required only by the workflows you choose, not mandatory dependencies for ordinary text editing.

Mac distribution and builds

The Universal package includes Intel and Apple Silicon support. The maintainer's current build notes describe continued support for macOS 10.12 and later, while explaining that builds no longer run directly on the old 10.12 build host. Older Intel systems from 10.12 through 10.15 can use the appropriate editor build without native compilation. Intel Macs on macOS 11 or later and Apple Silicon Macs have native-comp enabled in the newer packages. The launcher chooses the suitable bundled binary; build-host changes are not automatically a new runtime minimum.

Native compilation converts Emacs Lisp into native code and is distinct from ordinary byte compilation. A GNU upstream default does not by itself prove that every third-party binary includes this feature; the Mac distributor explicitly documents which builds enable it. The 30.2-1 and 30.2-2 suffixes identify Mac distribution rebuilds of GNU Emacs 30.2, not new upstream GNU version numbers.

The distributor also documents a launcher behavior that inherits environment variables from a login shell when launched from Finder, the Dock or open. If development tools differ between terminal and graphical sessions, inspect your configuration and environment rather than assuming a missing editor feature.

Platforms, resources and updates

GNU Emacs supports other operating systems through separate source builds or packages; this Universal DMG installs the Mac distribution only. The current 31.1 DMG download is 179,170,847 bytes, confirmed by official HTTP metadata. This is download size, not installed space. No universal RAM or exact installed-space minimum is asserted; large files, packages and native-comp caches consume additional resources.

Local file editing and built-in documentation work offline. Package downloads, remote files and online services require network access. Allow macOS access to the files and folders you intentionally edit; microphone or camera access is not a general text-editing requirement. Monitor release updates from the Mac distributor and GNU Emacs, and distinguish released builds from nightly or pretest snapshots.

Price and license

GNU Emacs is free software under GNU GPL version 3 or later. No subscription or online account is required for normal editor use. Donations to support the Mac build service or free-software development are optional. Documentation, bundled components, additional packages and external services retain their applicable licenses and terms. A paid service used inside Emacs is not included by installing this cask.
