Eclipse Temurin JDK

Eclipse Temurin is the Eclipse Adoptium distribution of OpenJDK, supplying the HotSpot Java runtime, compiler, standard libraries and diagnostic tools for Java application development and deployment. This unversioned Homebrew cask follows the newest feature release on Apple Silicon; projects requiring a particular Java major version should select a versioned JDK and configure their toolchain explicitly.

Installation and selection

Use brew install --cask temurin on macOS. Homebrew runs the official PKG installer, which can require administrator authorization. The system JDK is installed under /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines, not as a graphical IDE in Applications. For the current Apple Silicon JDK27, select the JDK in your IDE or use /usr/libexec/java_home -v 27 to locate JAVA_HOME. Check java -version and javac -version after configuration. Maven, Gradle and IDEs are separate optional tools; their Java-version requirements must match the selected JDK.

macOS requirements and architecture

The current default Apple Silicon download is Temurin27+35. Adoptium no longer builds Temurin27 for Intel Macs. The retrieved Homebrew Intel variations instead install Temurin26.0.2.1+1; the same cask name therefore does not guarantee the same Java major version across Mac architectures. Adoptium marks the Java26 line EOSL as of September2026, with no further community builds planned. Intel users should choose a maintained earlier JDK line compatible with their application rather than assume this fallback continues receiving updates.

The cask declares no explicit macOS minimum, additional formula dependencies, or cask conflicts. Its list of macOS variations is not a vendor guarantee for every OS/JDK combination. Consult Adoptium's supported-platform matrix for your Java version and CPU. No universal RAM or installed-storage minimum is specified in the referenced installer documentation; project size and JVM heap settings determine practical requirements.

Dependencies, coexistence and other platforms

A bundled Java runtime is included; another Java installation is not required. Multiple major-version JDKs can coexist in separate directories, but JAVA_HOME, PATH and IDE/build-tool settings determine which is active. Avoid managing the same installer receipt through independent installers. Native JNI libraries must match the selected JDK architecture; Java libraries and build tools may impose their own version constraints.

Temurin also has separate Windows and Linux distributions, with architectures and supported OS versions varying by Java release. Linux archives, distribution packages, container images and Windows installers are separate from this Mac PKG. Do not interpret Homebrew's Linux variation metadata as a usable Linux Cask installer. Android and iOS are not ordinary desktop JDK installation targets. Java27 is a feature release, not an LTS line; upgrades can change language/runtime compatibility, so test applications and build tools before changing the major version.

Accounts, price and licensing

Temurin downloads and normal use require no Adoptium account and are free, including commercial use. Optional third-party commercial support contracts are separate. OpenJDK uses GNU GPL version2 with the Classpath Exception; bundled components retain their notices. Eclipse Adoptium and contributors maintain the distribution.
